Java Architect

JOB PURPOSE:

lead the design and architecture of high-performance financial transaction systems, drive the transition to a proprietary solution that provides superior agility, faster time‑to‑market for custom payment products, and full control over integrations.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

• Design and architect enterprise-grade payment processing solutions using Java and jPOS.
• Lead the development of card management, transaction switching, authorization, clearing, and settlement systems.
• Design and implement ISO 8583-based transaction flows and message transformations.
• Architect acquiring, issuing, ATM, POS, and payment gateway integrations.
• Define secure and scalable microservices and event-driven architectures for financial systems.
• Ensure compliance with PCI-DSS, EMV, and financial security standards.
• Lead integration with banks, payment networks, switches, and third-party processors.
• Optimize transaction throughput, latency, resiliency, and fault tolerance.
• Design high-availability and disaster recovery strategies for payment platforms.
• Review technical designs, and solution architectures across development teams.
• Mentor engineering teams on payment architecture best practices and secure coding standards.
• Collaborate with product owners, operations, infrastructure, compliance, and security teams.
• Create architecture documentation, sequence diagrams, integration specifications, and operational runbooks.
• Support production troubleshooting, incident resolution, and performance tuning for transaction systems.
• Provide regular technical status, risk assessments, and milestone updates directly to the Software Engineering and Digital Senior Director.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & COMPETENCIES:

Education Background

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or related field

Competencies

- Expert in Java (17/21 LTS), concurrency, JVM tuning and high‑throughput systems.

- Deep experience in payment platform architecture – preferably replacing or integrating with BPC Smart Vista or similar switches (Postilion, ACI, etc.).

- Strong understanding of jPOS (working effectively with jPOS specialists).

- Proven track record in legacy modernization and phased migration projects (2‑3 year horizon).

- Microservices, event‑driven architecture (Kafka), Spring Boot, Kubernetes, and cloud-native design.

- Database architecture (SQL, NoSQL) for transaction and reconciliation data.

- Security: PCI DSS, encryption, HSM integration, secure key management.

- CI/CD, observability, and chaos engineering for payment‑grade resilience

Language Skills

English – fluent (technical design, board‑level presentations, stakeholder management)

Years of Experience

10 years in software development with at least 4 years as a Software Architect in fintech/payments, experience with BPC Smart Vista is a strong plus.
