Job Title: Mechanical Supervisor

Job Purpose:

To supervise daily industrial mechanical installation activities, control manpower and resources, and ensure that assigned work fronts are completed safely, productively and in accordance with approved technical and quality requirements.

1. Daily work planning and execution

• Receive the approved daily plan, drawings, method statements and priorities from the responsible engineer or construction manager.

• Translate the plan into clear tasks for foremen, chargehands and technicians.

• Confirm that work fronts, access, permits, materials, tools, equipment and supporting trades are ready before deployment.

• Monitor progress throughout the shift and adjust resources to achieve the agreed targets.

2. Mechanical installation supervision

• Supervise installation of static and rotating equipment, piping, valves, supports, ducts, tanks, platforms and mechanical accessories.

• Ensure correct positioning, leveling, orientation, alignment, bolting, torqueing, welding preparation and final fit-up.

• Confirm compliance with approved drawings, vendor instructions, method statements and project specifications.

• Prevent unauthorized field modifications and immediately escalate technical conflicts or missing information.

3. Manpower deployment and productivity

• Allocate fitters, welders, helpers and other trades based on competence and task requirements.

• Maintain attendance, working-hour and resource-allocation records for each work area.

• Set measurable daily production targets and monitor output, idle time, waiting time and rework.

• Report manpower shortages, performance concerns and required corrective actions to the responsible engineer.

4. Work-front readiness and coordination

• Verify civil readiness, foundations, embedded items, access, scaffolding, lifting requirements, lighting and housekeeping.

• Coordinate with electrical, instrumentation, civil, scaffolding, lifting, logistics and HSE teams to avoid interference.

• Identify obstacles and raise them early through the site coordination process.

• Protect installed equipment and completed works from damage by subsequent activities.

5. Materials, tools and equipment control

• Check that issued materials match approved specifications, drawings and material certificates.

• Control receipt, storage, handling and return of piping components, valves, gaskets, fasteners, equipment parts and consumables.

• Ensure proper use and daily inspection of tools, welding machines, torque equipment, lifting accessories and temporary facilities.

• Report shortages, damage, waste or loss immediately and support material reconciliation.

6. Quality control and inspection readiness

• Inspect work before requesting formal quality inspection and correct visible defects beforehand.

• Ensure dimensional checks, alignment readings, bolt torque records, welding traceability and test preparation are complete.

• Coordinate inspection requests with the site engineer and quality team.

• Support closure of punch points, non-conformance reports and quality observations within the agreed timeframe.

7. Health, safety and environmental compliance

• Conduct or support daily toolbox talks and task briefings.

• Enforce compliance with approved risk assessments, permits, PPE, lockout/tagout, work-at-height and lifting requirements.

• Stop unsafe work and immediately report incidents, near misses and hazardous conditions.

• Maintain clean, accessible and well-barricaded work areas and ensure safe storage of tools and materials.

8. Testing and pre-commissioning support

• Prepare systems for pressure testing, leak testing, flushing, cleaning, rotation checks, alignment verification and other pre-commissioning activities.

• Confirm temporary connections, vents, drains, blinds, test boundaries and exclusion zones are correctly installed.

• Coordinate manpower and equipment during tests and support reinstatement after successful completion.

• Ensure test records, punch items and outstanding actions are communicated to the engineer.

9. Reporting and documentation

• Prepare accurate daily progress, manpower, equipment and material reports.

• Maintain marked-up drawings, completed quantity records, inspection status and work-front photographs.

• Record delays, access restrictions, instructions, rework by others and extra-work activities as they occur.

• Provide timely information to support progress measurement, invoicing, variations and claims.

10. Team leadership and handover

• Lead by example and maintain discipline, professional conduct and cooperation within the workforce.

• Coach foremen and technicians on installation quality, productivity, safe working and housekeeping.

• Coordinate punch-list completion, preservation, cleaning and area handover.

• Ensure all tools, surplus materials, temporary supports and waste are removed before final acceptance.

Qualifications:

• Education: Technical diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Mechanics, Mechanical Construction or a related discipline.

• A bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering is advantageous but not mandatory where strong field experience is demonstrated.

• Trade qualifications in pipe fitting, equipment installation, welding supervision or industrial mechanics are a plus.

Experience:

• Minimum 15 years of relevant industrial mechanical installation experience, including at least 5 years in a supervisory role.

• Hands-on experience with equipment erection, piping, supports, ducting, steel accessories, alignment and mechanical completion.

• Experience in power, cement, steel, gypsum, petrochemical, utilities or process-plant projects is preferred.

Technical Skills:

• Ability to read general arrangement drawings, isometrics, support drawings, equipment layouts and vendor manuals.

• Good understanding of mechanical fit-up, alignment, bolting, torqueing, gasket installation, welding preparation and testing.

• Ability to estimate daily manpower, tools, access and material requirements.

• Practical knowledge of inspection requests, punch lists, material control and daily progress measurement.

Software:

• Basic to intermediate use of Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and mobile reporting applications.

• Ability to review PDF drawings and use digital photographs and mark-ups for progress reporting.

• Familiarity with ERP, attendance or document-control systems is advantageous.

Physical Demands:

• Ability to work outdoors, at height, in confined spaces and around heavy machinery.

• Ability to stand, walk, climb and inspect work areas for extended periods.

• Availability for overtime, night shifts, weekends and shutdown work as required by the project.

Certification and Training:

• Construction safety, permit-to-work, work-at-height, confined-space, fire-watch and lifting-awareness training.

• Pipe fitting, mechanical equipment installation, torqueing, alignment or welding-supervision training is advantageous.

• First-aid and basic emergency-response training is preferred.
