Job Description

Position Overview

The Accountant is responsible for maintaining accurate and up-to-date financial records and supporting the financial management of construction projects. The role involves recording and monitoring financial transactions, project cost tracking, job costing, progress billing, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and fixed asset accounting. The Accountant ensures compliance with accounting standards, tax and regulatory requirements, and company policies while providing timely and accurate financial information to support management decision-making and project cost control.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Accounting & Record Keeping

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records of company transactions, including purchases, sales, receipts, payments, and journal entries, in accordance with applicable accounting standards and company procedures.
  • Record and allocate project-related expenses accurately to the appropriate projects, cost centers, and accounts.
  • Perform regular account reconciliations and ensure the accuracy and completeness of financial records.
  • Maintain proper supporting documentation for all financial transactions in accordance with company policies and audit requirements.
  • Support the preparation of periodic financial statements, management reports, and other financial analyses as required.

Project Accounting & Cost Control

  • Monitor and track project costs, budgets, commitments, and actual expenditures to support effective project cost control.
  • Perform job costing and ensure accurate allocation of direct and indirect costs to construction projects.
  • Monitor project financial performance by comparing actual costs against budgets and forecasts and highlighting significant variances.
  • Support project managers by providing timely financial information and reports to assist in cost control and profitability analysis.
  • Monitor progress billing and ensure accurate recording and follow-up of project revenues and receivables.
  • Track and account for subcontractor costs and payments in accordance with contractual terms and project requirements.

Accounts Payable, Receivable & Payroll

  • Process and monitor accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions to ensure timely payments and collections.
  • Review invoices, payment requests, and supporting documents to ensure accuracy and compliance with contractual and company requirements.
  • Maintain and monitor aging reports and follow up on outstanding receivables and payables.
  • Support payroll processing and ensure accurate recording of payroll-related transactions and allocations.
  • Coordinate with project and procurement teams to resolve discrepancies related to invoices, payments, and project costs.

Fixed Assets & Equipment Accounting

  • Record and maintain fixed asset registers, including heavy machinery, equipment, and other project-related assets.
  • Calculate and record depreciation in accordance with applicable accounting standards and company policies.
  • Track asset utilization and allocate asset-related costs to the relevant projects and cost centers.
  • Ensure proper documentation and reconciliation of fixed assets and support periodic asset verification activities.

Financial Analysis & Reporting

  • Analyze financial data to identify trends, risks, cost variances, and opportunities for improved financial performance.
  • Prepare financial reports, summaries, and analyses to support management decision-making.
  • Compare actual financial performance against budgets and forecasts and provide explanations for significant variances.
  • Provide financial insights and recommendations to management based on financial analysis and project performance.
  • Prepare relevant financial information and presentations as required by management.

Systems, Compliance & Audit

  • Utilize accounting and ERP systems to maintain accurate financial records and streamline accounting processes.
  • Support the implementation and effective use of accounting software and ERP systems, including process improvements and automation of repetitive accounting activities.
  • Participate in internal and external audits by preparing supporting documentation, responding to auditors queries, and assisting in the implementation of audit recommendations.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, tax regulations, and company policies.
  • Stay updated on changes in accounting standards, financial regulations, and tax requirements and ensure their proper application in accounting practices.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in accounting or a similar finance/accounting department.
  • Previous experience in the construction industry is preferred, particularly in project accounting, job costing, or construction finance.

Skills & Competencies

Technical Skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, data analysis, and ERP/accounting systems.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, job costing, and financial analysis.
  • Knowledge of project-based accounting and construction financial processes is an advantage.

Language Skills

  • Advanced proficiency in English, both written and verbal.
  • High proficiency in French, is preferred.

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

Certifications (Preferred)

  • IFRS Diploma or other relevant professional accounting/finance certifications are considered an asset.
