Job Summary

Emirates Park Zoo & Resort is looking for an experienced Animal Trainer to work with a variety of species, ensuring their welfare while preparing them for husbandry, enrichment, and educational presentations. The role involves designing and executing training programs, providing companionship and enrichment, assisting veterinary care, and presenting animals to the public safely. The Animal Trainer will work closely with other trainers, keepers, and the Training Manager to optimize animal welfare and visitor engagement.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform daily husbandry and cleaning of animals in training.
  • Manage and provide species-appropriate diets in line with training programs.
  • Build positive relationships with animals through companionship and trust.
  • Train animals using operant conditioning and other humane methods.
  • Maintain detailed records of training progress, behavior, and health.
  • Create and execute training plans to support animal welfare and performance.
  • Liaise with the Training Manager regarding each animal's mental and physical state.
  • Assist veterinary staff with treatments and health procedures.
  • Educate other staff on proper handling and safe training techniques.
  • Present animals on-site, at off-site locations, and during special events.
  • Be flexible with working hours as requested by the Zoo Manager for events.
  • Organize and maintain food, enrichment items, and training equipment with the Store Supervisor.
  • Provide enrichment activities for animals under training.
  • Assist with training animals outside of assigned quota as needed.
  • Conduct research to enhance training programs, shows, and presentations.
  • Work collaboratively with other trainers and staff to optimize training schedules.
Requirements
  • Minimum 35 years of experience in animal training, preferably in a zoo, sanctuary, or wildlife facility.
  • Strong knowledge of animal behavior, welfare, and operant conditioning techniques.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with animals, staff, and the public.
  • Ability to assess animal behavior and apply appropriate, humane training methods.
  • Patience, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work with animals of varying temperaments.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Commitment to never abuse or punish animals; focus on positive reinforcement.
  • Willingness to work outdoors, weekends, holidays, and attend events.
  • English proficiency required; Arabic is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of animal husbandry, enrichment, and health care procedures.
