Role Overview
The Quarantine Technician is responsible for the welfare of livestock within the in-house quarantine facility. This role includes the maintenance and upkeep of all aquarium systems and the consistent application of best-practice husbandry protocols to ensure the smooth and safe movement of livestock through the quarantine process.
A strong understanding of biosecure protocols is essential, along with hands-on expertise in aquatic husbandry and the ability to identify potential aquatic illnesses. The role plays a key part in maintaining livestock health, system integrity, and overall quarantine standards.
Responsibilities
- Maintaining all quarantine holding tanks, making sure the water parameters are ideal for the relevant livestock
- Performing regular water changes, parameter checks and daily cleaning
- Observing and identifying possible sick fish and livestock, informing the quarantine specialist of any abnormalities
- Administering treatments as recommended by the quarantine specialist with the utmost care
- Keeping accurate records of all treatments, water changes completed as well as any mortalities found
- Ensuring all equipment are cared for, properly cleaned and disinfected and notified if replacements are needed
- Receive regular livestock shipments as organized by the Quarantine Team Supervisor, acclimating correctly and recording any DOAs
- Preparing livestock for transfer to The Petshop aquatic stores, ensuring all fish bags are sufficiently supplied with oxygen and seal correctly
- Aid store staff wherever needed, providing information and assistance if called upon
Must Have Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent is essential.
- At least 2 years working in the aquarium industry, aquaculture or similar.
- A good understanding of aquarium systems, how each piece of equipment functions and how to achieve perfect water parameters.
- Knowledge of both freshwater and marine aquatic illnesses, the key indicators and the associated treatment methods.
- Good reporting and observation skills.
- Valid manual driving license
- An understanding of the important of being bio-secure, and how to properly keep the quarantine area clean and disinfected.
- Experience working in a team and in a high pressure environment.
- Proficiency in English is essential.
- Excellent aquatic husbandry knowledge.
