Contract Type: Teaching & Scholarship

Grade: 7

Starting Salary: AED 21,800 - 26,000 Monthly all Incl (Depending on Experience)

FTE and working pattern: 1FTE, Full time - 35 hrs per week

About the School

The School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences has been teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate Computer Science programmes at our Dubai Campus since it opened in 2005. At Heriot-Watt university, we have the largest branch campus of any international university in the UAE, and our university is fully licensed by the Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA), the UAE's federal quality assurance agency.

In 2025, the school launched one of our Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics programmes, the BSc Actuarial Data Science. This has necessitated the recruitment of additional staff, as we will begin teaching Year 3 in the 2026/27 academic year. The programme is taught and assessed in Dubai in close collaboration with colleagues at our Edinburgh campus, ensuring alignment with the University's academic standards and global expertise. The BSc Actuarial Data Science programme is accredited by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) United Kingdom, holds UCAP-Advanced Curriculum (UCAP-AC) status from the Society of Actuaries (SOA) United States of America, and is also accredited by the Royal Statistical Society (RSS) United Kingdom. Purpose of the role

We are expanding our portfolio of teaching at our Dubai campus, and we require an Assistant Professor who will be expected to deliver and assess a range of undergraduate Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics courses at the University's Dubai Campus, working in collaboration with colleagues at our Dubai, Edinburgh and Malaysia campuses.

In addition, this position will require the undertaking of administrative duties, involvement in student recruitment activities, and the supervision of student projects and dissertations.

An interest and background in statistical or actuarial science research either in academia or in industry would be desirable.

The successful applicant will hold a postgraduate degree in actuarial science, statistics, or a closely related discipline. A Fellow or Associate of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA), or an equivalent designation from another recognised actuarial professional body is highly desirable. Previous teaching experience is essential.

A working knowledge of topics such as risk management and modelling, business finance, business economics, and statistical analysis is expected.

Education, qualifications and experience

Essential

  • PhD or equivalent in Actuarial Science or Statistics, or a closely related discipline
  • Relevant teaching experience at H.E. level
  • Ability to teach and supervise topics in a wide range of actuarial mathematics and statistics subjects and subjects relevant to computer science
  • A track record of research evidenced by e.g. journal publications and conference papers and presentations
  • Excellent spoken, written and understanding of English
  • Relevant teamwork and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to work flexibly and carry out teaching activities in the evenings and weekends

Desirable

  • A Fellow or Associate of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA), or an equivalent designation from another recognised actuarial professional body
  • Evidence of scholarship and/or research in statistics, actuarial science, financial mathematics or data science
  • Experience of working at a British university or experience of delivering British university programmes in other countries
  • An ability to identify and develop opportunities for personal and collective research
  • Membership of professional bodies such as the Institute of Actuaries
