JOB DESCRIPTION
The Barista at Earth Roastery is responsible for delivering high-quality coffee and beverages, maintaining inventory accuracy, handling light kitchen operations, and ensuring excellent customer service. The role includes preparing coffee, specialty teas, fresh juices, sandwiches, and maintaining cleanliness, food safety, and operational standards.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Coffee & Beverage Preparation
- Prepare espresso-based beverages according to Earth Roastery standards (espresso, cappuccino, latte, flat white, etc.).
- Dial-in espresso daily to ensure correct grind size, extraction time, and flavor balance.
- Prepare pour-over, batch brew, and other manual brewing methods as required.
- Steam milk and prepare beverages with proper texture and temperature.
- Maintain consistency in taste, presentation, and portion size.
2. Specialty Tea & Other Beverages
- Prepare specialty tea beverages according to approved recipes and brewing standards.
- Handle tea brewing temperatures, steeping times, and presentation.
- Prepare fresh juices, smoothies, and cold beverages while maintaining hygiene standards.
- Ensure proper storage and handling of tea leaves, syrups, and juice ingredients.
3. Kitchen & Food Handling
- Prepare sandwiches, light meals, and café food items following SOPs and recipes.
- Handle basic kitchen equipment safely (grill, toaster, blender, etc.).
- Ensure proper food preparation, portion control, and presentation.
- Follow food safety, hygiene, and temperature control procedures.
- Maintain cleanliness of kitchen counters, tools, and storage areas.
4. Inventory & Stock Control
- Monitor daily stock levels of coffee beans, milk, syrups, tea, food items, and disposables.
- Conduct daily and weekly inventory counts as assigned.
- Report low stock, damages, or expiries to the Branch Supervisor or Café Manager.
- Follow FIFO (First-In, First-Out) and proper storage practices.
- Assist in receiving, checking, and storing deliveries.
5. Customer Service & Order Handling
- Greet customers professionally and take orders accurately.
- Provide basic product knowledge and recommendations to customers.
- Handle customer feedback, complaints, and special requests politely.
- Ensure quick and efficient service during peak hours.
6. Cash Handling & POS
- Operate the POS system accurately.
- Handle cash and card transactions responsibly.
- Follow company procedures for cash control and reporting.
7. Cleanliness, Hygiene & Safety
- Maintain cleanliness of coffee bar, kitchen, dining area, and equipment.
- Perform opening and closing cleaning duties as per checklist.
- Follow personal hygiene, food safety, and health regulations.
- Ensure compliance with local municipality and food safety standards.
8. Equipment Care & Maintenance
- Clean and maintain coffee machines, grinders, brewers, and kitchen equipment daily.
- Identify and report any equipment malfunction immediately.
- Follow proper usage and safety guidelines for all equipment.
9. Teamwork & Compliance
- Work closely with the barista team, kitchen staff, and supervisors.
- Follow Earth Roastery SOPs, recipes, and brand standards.
- Support training of junior baristas when required.
- Adhere to company policies, attendance, and workplace conduct rules.
Qualifications
- Proficiency in barista skills and knowledge of coffee preparation techniques
- Strong interpersonal skills and excellent customer service abilities
- Effective communication skills to engage with customers and team members
- Experience or familiarity with food preparation and maintaining hygiene standards
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail
- Willingness to learn and grow within the specialty coffee industry
- Previous experience as a barista or in food service is a plus
