Position Overview
The Chief Accountant is responsible for leading the organization's accounting and financial operations, ensuring accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and effective financial control across all projects and business functions. This role oversees project accounting, cash flow management, budgeting support, audits, taxation, and financial risk management while ensuring compliance with accounting standards and company policies. The Chief Accountant provides financial insights to senior management, supports strategic decision-making, and leads the accounting team to drive operational excellence and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Compliance
- Oversee the preparation and submission of accurate and timely financial reports in compliance with applicable accounting standards, company policies, and regulatory requirements.
- Review financial data, validate accounting records, and coordinate with relevant departments to ensure accurate consolidated financial reporting.
- Ensure compliance with statutory requirements, accounting regulations, and internal financial controls.
Financial Planning & Analysis
- Provide financial analysis, insights, and recommendations to support strategic planning and operational decision-making.
- Monitor financial performance through variance analysis, trend analysis, and key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Support senior management with financial forecasts and business performance evaluations.
Accounting Operations
- Supervise day-to-day accounting activities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger, and project accounting.
- Ensure accounting transactions are accurately recorded and completed within established timelines.
- Maintain the integrity and accuracy of financial records and accounting systems.
Cash Flow & Risk Management
- Monitor cash flow and manage working capital to ensure the organization's financial stability and operational continuity.
- Forecast cash inflows and outflows while optimizing receivables, payables, and funding requirements.
- Identify financial risks and develop effective mitigation strategies to safeguard the organization's financial position.
- Ensure appropriate insurance coverage for company assets and liabilities through regular policy reviews and coordination with insurance providers.
Audit & Regulatory Compliance
- Coordinate internal and external audits by preparing required documentation and facilitating communication with auditors.
- Ensure timely resolution of audit findings and implementation of corrective actions where required.
- Support tax compliance activities and ensure adherence to all applicable financial regulations.
Process Improvement & Systems Development
- Continuously improve accounting processes and internal controls to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and effectiveness.
- Lead the implementation of new accounting standards, financial systems, and technologies while ensuring successful adoption across the finance function.
- Promote best practices in financial management and process automation.
Team Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team to strengthen technical capabilities and overall performance.
- Provide guidance on complex accounting matters and ensure consistent application of accounting standards.
- Foster a collaborative and high-performance working environment within the finance team.
Qualifications & Experience
Education
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline from an accredited university.
Experience
- Minimum 10 years of experience in accounting or finance, preferably within the construction industry.
- At least 3 years of experience in a leadership role managing accounting or finance teams.
- Previous experience in the construction industry is required.
- Previous experience working on international or GCC construction projects is required.
Skills & Competencies
Technical Skills:
Proficient in Microsoft Office, ERP Systems, Financial Reporting, and Data Analysis.
Language Skills:
Advanced proficiency in English (written and verbal).
Soft Skills:
Strong leadership, communication, analytical thinking, decision-making, negotiation, presentation, time management, teamwork, flexibility, and attention to detail.
Certifications (Preferred)
- IFRS Diploma or an equivalent professional accounting certification is preferred.
