Cohesity NetBackup (Alta Data Protection) Engineer

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Cohesity NetBackup Engineer with 10+ years of hands-on expertise in enterprise data protection, backup, and recovery solutions, along with strong working knowledge of Azure cloud infrastructure. The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing, implementing, and managing backup and disaster recovery strategies across on-premises and cloud environments using the Cohesity NetBackup platform and the Alta Data Protection cloud-native suite, ensuring data integrity, availability, and compliance across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, deploy, configure, and administer Cohesity NetBackup environments (Master/Media servers, clients, NetBackup-powered appliances) across enterprise infrastructure.
  
• Leverage the Alta Data Protection platform and Alta View console for unified visibility, orchestration, and management of backup and recovery across hybrid and multi-cloud environments.
  
• Manage end-to-end backup operations including scheduling, monitoring, troubleshooting, and performance tuning of backup and restore jobs.
  
• Implement and maintain backup policies, storage lifecycle policies, retention schedules, and data deduplication strategies.
  
• Lead backup infrastructure upgrades, migrations, and integrations, ensuring minimal downtime and zero data loss.
  
• Configure and manage backup for physical, virtual (VMware/Hyper-V), and cloud workloads.
  
• Design and implement Disaster Recovery (DR) strategies, including DR testing, failover/failback procedures, and RTO/RPO alignment.
  
• Administer backup infrastructure components including tape libraries, disk-based storage (Data Domain, StoreOnce, etc.), and cloud storage tiers.
  
• Manage Azure-based backup and cloud infrastructure components, ensuring secure, compliant, and cost-effective data protection for cloud workloads.
  
• Utilize Alta Recovery Vault and related cloud-based data vaulting capabilities to enable immutable, air-gapped data isolation and rapid cyber recovery.
  
• Monitor backup health, proactively resolve failures, and maintain SLAs for backup success rates.
  
• Prepare capacity planning reports, technical documentation, SOPs, and audit support materials.
  
• Collaborate with cross-functional infrastructure, security, and application teams on data protection strategy and cloud backup architecture.
  
• Provide Level 3/4 escalation support for critical backup and recovery incidents.
  
• Ensure compliance with organizational security policies, encryption standards, and regulatory requirements.
  

Required Skills & Experience

Backup & Storage Expertise

• 10+ years of experience in enterprise backup and data protection solutions.
  
• Strong hands-on expertise in Cohesity NetBackup (formerly Veritas NetBackup; versions 7.x/8.x/9.x/10.x/11.x) including Master Server, Media Server, and appliance administration.
  
• Familiarity with the Alta Data Protection cloud-native platform, including Alta View (unified management console) and Alta Recovery Vault (cloud-based cyber-resilient vaulting).
  
• Experience with backup for databases (SQL, Oracle), file systems, virtual environments (VMware/Hyper-V via NDMP/VADP), and Exchange environments.
  
• Working knowledge of complementary backup platforms (e.g., Commvault, Veeam, Rubrik, Dell Networker/Avamar/PPDM) is a plus.
  
• Experience with tape libraries, deduplication appliances (Data Domain, StoreOnce), and SAN/NAS/DAS storage.
  
• Strong background in Disaster Recovery planning, execution, and testing.
  
• Experience with data aging, auxiliary copies, content indexing, multiplexing, and licensing management.
  

Azure Cloud Knowledge

Candidates should have solid working knowledge across the following Azure areas as they relate to backup and infrastructure operations:

• Landing Zone Concepts: Understanding of basic Azure landing zone architecture and design principles.
  
• Subscription Demarcation: Knowledge of how Azure subscriptions are structured and segmented for governance and workload isolation.
  
• Virtual Network Concepts: Familiarity with VNets, subnets, private endpoints, and service endpoints.
  
• Connectivity: Understanding of how connectivity works within Azure and between on-premises and Azure environments (VPN, ExpressRoute, peering).
  
• DNS in Azure: Knowledge of Azure DNS resolution, including private DNS zones.
  
• RBAC & Zero Trust: Understanding of Role-Based Access Control and Zero Trust security principles as applied to Azure environments.
  
• Storage Accounts: Intermediate-to-advanced level knowledge of Azure Storage Accounts (blob, file, tiering, redundancy options).
  
• Identity & Access: Familiarity with App Registrations, Service Principals, and Managed Identities.
  
• Microsoft Entra: Basic understanding of Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD) concepts.
  
• Compute & Data Services: Basic knowledge of Virtual Machines, databases, and PaaS services in Azure, particularly as they relate to backup and data protection.
  
• Cost Management: Ability to perform Azure cost analysis and optimize cloud spend related to backup/storage workloads.
  
• Monitoring & Dashboarding: Understanding of Azure Monitor and dashboarding tools to gain visibility into backup platform usage and health.
  

General Skills

• Strong troubleshooting and root-cause analysis capabilities for complex backup/storage issues.
  
• Experience with ITIL-based change, incident, and problem management processes.
  
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to interface with technical teams, vendors, and stakeholders across geographies.
  
• Proven ability to mentor team members and lead technical initiatives.
  
• Strong documentation skills (SOPs, KPI reports, capacity planning reports).
  

Preferred Certifications

• Cohesity NetBackup Certified Specialist (formerly Veritas Certified Specialist – NetBackup Administration)
  
• Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104)
  
• AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate (preferred, not mandatory)
  
• ITIL Foundation Certification
  
• Additional certifications in Commvault, Veeam, or Rubrik are a plus
  

Educational Qualification

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
