Role Overview
We are seeking a Compliance Officer to support a global commodities trading business active across a broad range of physical and financial commodities. Based in Singapore, the role sits close to the trading desks and provides hands-on, commercially focused KYC and compliance support across the firm's trading activities in the region.
The role supports the compliance and KYC function within BB Energy's Singapore office and, where required, other global offices across the BB Energy group.
This position combines counterparty due diligence and KYC work with broader day-to-day compliance and advisory support. It is well suited to a candidate who wants to work across both KYC and transactional compliance, rather than in a KYC-only or purely administrative capacity.
Key Responsibilities
KYC and counterparty due diligence
- Carry out KYC and risk-based due diligence on new and existing counterparties, ensuring all parties are appropriately vetted and checks are completed in line with the firm's Global KYC Policy and compliance requirements.
- Conduct sanctions, adverse media, PEP and reputational screening using the firm's screening tools, investigating true matches and escalating where required.
- Assist with the ongoing monitoring, review and escalation of existing counterparties, including annual high-risk client reviews.
- Maintain accurate KYC records and documentation to a standard that is audit-defensible and supports the firm's onboarding and counterparty database.
Compliance advisory and support
- Act as a day-to-day compliance contact for the trading desks and support functions in Singapore and the wider region.
- Provide compliance input into new counterparties, trading activity and market entry, ensuring regulatory and sanctions obligations are identified and addressed at an early stage.
- Provide practical, real-time compliance advice to traders and operations covering market conduct, sanctions, trade controls and higher-risk jurisdictions.
- Advise on UK, EU, US and Singapore sanctions regimes relevant to commodity trading, including counterparty, cargo and vessel-related risk.
- Assist with responses to information requests and enhanced due diligence queries from banks, regulators and other stakeholders.
- Support the Head of Compliance on day-to-day tasks and projects, both new and ongoing.
Framework, policy and training
- Contribute to the development, implementation and delivery of compliance policies, procedures and trader-focused training, and monitor business adoption.
- Maintain excellent working knowledge of client checking, AML and CFT procedures and the relevant regulation.
- Support implementation of regulatory-driven change initiatives impacting the trading business.
- Escalate material compliance issues to the Head of Compliance in a timely and well-reasoned manner, with clear analysis and practical recommendations.
Required Experience and Background
- A university degree (legal or other relevant discipline).
- At least 5 years relevant experience in a Compliance role within an oil major or commodity trading house.
- Good knowledge of AML, KYC and sanctions requirements for both APAC and globally based counterparties.
- Strong analytical skills, attention to detail and a process-driven approach.
- Sound judgement and the ability to deliver clear, defensible compliance advice in time-critical situations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage directly with traders and senior stakeholders.
- Proficiency in common Microsoft Office and compliance screening software.
Desirable
- Prior experience dealing with high-risk clients and jurisdictions.
- Knowledge of sanctions, anti-bribery and corruption compliance, and familiarity with commodity and energy trading regulatory regimes.
- Exposure to both physical commodities and derivatives.
- Fluency in an additional Asian language, in particular Mandarin, to converse with Mandarin-speaking counterparties, would be an advantage.
- A relevant compliance, legal or professional qualification (for example CAMS) is advantageous but not essential.
Personal Attributes
- Commercial, pragmatic and solutions-focused.
- Confident engaging directly with traders and senior stakeholders.
- Comfortable operating within a defined escalation framework.
- Resilient, proactive and stress-tolerant in a fast-paced environment.
- A collaborative team player with a robust compliance risk mindset.
