Job Description

Core Responsibilities

  • Precision Pre-Bending: Operate the hydraulic crimping press to bend plate edges to the specific radius required for the final pipe diameter.
  • Edge Alignment: Ensure perfectly symmetrical bending on both longitudinal edges to prevent peaking, waviness during the subsequent JCO forming process.
  • Tooling Setup: Change crimping dies based on the plate thickness and steel grade (e.g., X65, X70, X80).
  • Dimensional Verification: Use radius templates and gauges to verify the Crimp Radius and Flat Zone width (which must be minimized to facilitate high-quality SAW welding).
  • Surface Protection: Monitor the process to ensure no die marks, indentations, or surface galling occur on the plate edges
  • Equipment Monitoring: Perform daily checks on high-pressure hydraulic pumps, cylinder synchronization, and automated plate-feeding conveyors.

Technical Skill Set

  • CNC/HMI Operation: Proficiency in operating automated control systems from manufacturers like HaeuslerSMS Group, or Linsinger.
  • Hydraulics Knowledge: Basic understanding of high-pressure hydraulic circuits (often exceeding 300 bar) and proportional valve control.
  • Measurement Tools: Expert use of radius templates, digital callipers

Key Qualifications

  • Education: ITI (Fitter/Mechanical) or a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience: 3+-8 years of experience specifically in Crimping or Pre-bending within an LSAW or UOE pipe mill.
  • Industry Background: Candidates from similar industries are highly preferred due to their familiarity with high-strength API-grade steels.

 Preferred Attributes

  • Understanding how edge-bending affects the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) during later welding stages.
  • Strict adherence to Lock-Out Tag-Out (LOTO) and safety protocols, as the crimping press involves high-force pinch points.
  • Zero-Defect Mindset: Proactive identification of plate laminations or edge defects that become visible only after the bending stress is applied.

Employer-Specific Context

  • Strict focus on minimizing the unbent flat edge to ensure a perfect circular profile at the weld seam
  • Integration with automated data logging to track Crimping Force per plate per stroke
  • Focus on high-speed throughput and rapid die changeovers to maintain aggressive production schedules.
