Is responsible for leading the development, implementation, and management of the organization's data governance strategy. This role ensures that data is accurately classified, cataloged, and compliant with regulatory standards across all systems and platforms. The Data Governance AVP will work to establish clear data ownership, stewardship, and accountability, ensuring that data assets are appropriately managed throughout their lifecycle. While collaborating with other teams focused on data security and quality, the Data Governance AVP will ensure alignment of governance practices with the organization's strategic objectives, promoting a culture of data integrity, transparency, and compliance.
Development and Implementation of Data Governance Frameworks:
- Design and implement data governance policies, standards, and procedures to ensure data is consistently and accurately managed.
- Establish a robust data ownership and stewardship model, defining roles and responsibilities across the organization.
- Implement tools and technologies to support data governance activities, such as data catalogs and lineage tracking.
- Ensure alignment of the data governance framework with organizational goals and regulatory requirements.
Data Compliance and Regulatory Adherence:
- Monitor adherence to data-related regulatory requirements such as GDPR, HIPAA, or CCPA.
- Collaborate with legal and compliance teams to address data privacy and protection regulations effectively.
- Develop processes to ensure proper classification and handling of sensitive data.
- Audit and report compliance status, ensuring all gaps are addressed with corrective action plans.
Data Stewardship and Accountability:
- Define and implement a comprehensive data stewardship program, empowering data stewards across departments.
- Foster accountability by establishing processes for monitoring data ownership and decision-making.
- Provide training and resources to ensure stakeholders understand their roles in data governance.
- Regularly evaluate the effectiveness of stewardship initiatives and refine them as needed.
Metadata Management and Implementation of Data Catalog Solution:
- Lead the implementation and adoption of enterprise-wide data catalog solutions to enhance metadata management and data discovery.
- Define and maintain metadata standards, ensuring consistency and alignment across all data assets.
- Collaborate with business and technical teams to populate and enrich metadata for improved usability and governance.
- Drive awareness and training programs to ensure stakeholders understand the value and usage of the data catalog.
Monitoring and Continuous Improvement:
- Implement metrics and KPIs to measure the effectiveness of data governance programs and their impact on business outcomes.
- Regularly review and enhance governance practices to adapt to evolving business and technological landscapes.
- Utilize analytics and reporting to provide actionable insights on data governance effectiveness.
- Ensure the governance framework is scalable and adaptable to meet future organizational needs.
Educational Requirements: A Master's Degree in Data Management, Information Systems, Business Administration, or a related discipline is highly preferred. Advanced degrees equip professionals with the strategic and analytical capabilities to design and implement comprehensive data governance frameworks, ensuring compliance, accountability, and alignment with organizational goals.
Special Certification or Training Required:
- Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP): Essential expertise in data governance, stewardship, and management practices.
- Certified Information Governance Officer (CIGO): Advanced knowledge in data governance and regulatory compliance is preferred.
Required Industry Experience:
- 12 years of experience in data governance, data management, and enterprise data strategy, with a strong focus on implementing governance frameworks and processes.
- Proven ability to establish and manage data stewardship programs and drive enterprise-wide data accountability.
- Extensive experience in aligning data governance practices with organizational goals, regulatory compliance, and operational requirements.
- Hands-on experience with metadata management, data catalog solutions, and implementing policies for data lifecycle management.
Technological Requirements:
- Proficiency in metadata management and data catalog tools (e.g., Collibra, Alation, Informatica).
- Familiarity with data governance platforms to support policy enforcement and compliance tracking.
- Experience in cloud-based data platforms (e.g., AWS Glue, Azure Data Catalog, Google Cloud Data Catalog) for governance implementation is preferred.
- Knowledge of relational and NoSQL databases for enterprise data management (e.g., Oracle, SQL Server, MongoDB).
- Hands-on experience with data lineage and impact analysis tools for monitoring and tracing data flows.
- Strong understanding of data privacy and compliance standards (e.g., GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA) and tools for implementing these regulations.
- Advanced programming skills in data analysis and governance automation.
- Familiarity with data integration tools (e.g., Informatica, MuleSoft, Apache Nifi) to ensure governed data pipelines.
