Job Description

Job Purpose:

The Director of Digital Online is responsible for developing and managing the Museum's online presence to maximize reach, accessibility, and audience engagement across digital channels. This role focuses on creating persistent, discoverable, and participatory digital experiences that extend the Museum's presence globally and provide an agency for users to interact with the Museum's collections, knowledge, and programs. The successful candidate will lead on strategy and content for the website, online learning platforms, and digital publications, employing innovative tools and research-driven approaches to broaden audiences. The Director will collaborate closely with the Collections and Exhibitions, Public Engagement, Commercial and Advancement, and Communications departments to ensure digital outputs are cohesive, inclusive, and aligned with institutional objectives. In developing strategies and programs, the job holder will activate synergy potentials with institutions across the Royal Arts Complex.

Roles and Responsibilities

Strategy and Planning:

  • Design and execute innovative strategies for online exhibitions and digital content aligned with the museum's narrative.
  • Develop outreach and engagement strategies to expand the museum's digital reach.
  • Apply research and foresight in digital culture trends to inform planning.

Budget Management;

  • Manage and allocate budget for digital online projects, ensuring cost- effectiveness and alignment with strategic priorities.

Policies, Processes, and Procedures:

  • Ensure digital content complies with digital preservation standards and accessibility guidelines.
  • Maintain digital content using metadata standards such as Dublin Core.

Functional Accountabilities:

  • Lead the design and execution of innovative online exhibitions that reflect the museum's collections and narratives while engaging diverse audiences across digital platforms.
  • Oversee the curation and management of digital content ensuring regular updates and enhancements that adhere to best practices in digital scholarship and user engagement.
  • Oversee the conduction of thorough research to support the development of digital content and exhibitions, ensuring historical accuracy and educational relevance.
  • Collaborate with technology teams to implement interactive features and tools that elevate the user experience across the museum's online presence.
  • Oversee the establishment of metrics and evaluation methods to assess the impact of digital curatorial initiatives and report on findings to inform future practices.
  • Lead outreach initiatives that expand the museum's presence in the digital ecosystem, fostering partnerships and collaborations with educational organizations and cultural institutions.

Stakeholder Management:

  • Collaborate with curators, educators, technologists, and cultural institutions to create cohesive digital experiences.
  • Lead and support outreach initiatives with educational and cultural partners.

People Management:

  • Live by MoWC values, ethical standards, and governance.
  • Manage and support team members in performing their tasks in line with established policies and procedures.
  • Guide, mentor, and develop the Digital Online team to ensure continuous growth and achievement of functional objectives.
  • Set clear performance goals, provide regular feedback, and support professional development through coaching and formal evaluations.
  • Delegate authority appropriately to empower team members and encourage accountability.
  • Contribute to workforce planning, recruitment, and performance management while promoting employee engagement and motivation.
  • Foster a high-performance, inclusive, and collaborative work culture aligned with the museum's values.

  • Maintain high personal standards and ensure excellence across the section.
  • Ensure the provision of training and support to staff on digital curation processes and tools, fostering a culture of digital literacy and innovation across the organization.

Job Qualifications and Requirements

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Minimum of 8 years experience in Digital Curation, Museum Studies, or related fields.
  • Expertise in CMS platforms like Omeika, Drupal, or WordPress.
  • Proven track recording online exhibition development and audience engagement.
  • Strong grasp of digital preservation methods and accessibility standards.
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools and analytics for user engagement.

Education and Certifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in art history, Museum Studies, or related discipline. Master's degree is strongly preferred.
  • Continued education or certification in digital curations highly preferred.

Personal capabilities and qualifications:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas and narratives effectively through digital media. Strong analytical skills to interpret data and feedback to enhance digital curation practices and audience engagement strategies.
  • Creative thinking and problem-solving skills to develop innovative digital solutions and content that align with curatorial goals.
  • Expert knowledge of digital curation standards, including metadata standards and accessibility guidelines, such as Dublin Core and WCAG.
  • Profound understanding of current trends and technologies in digital culture and online museums, enabling strategic foresight in digital curation projects.
  • Proficiency in using data analysis tools and digital metrics to gauge the effectiveness of online exhibitions and user engagement.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams, facilitating discussions and mediating between technical and creative stakeholders.
