Core Responsibilities
- Precision Milling: Operate heavy-duty CNC edge milling machines to achieve the specified plate width and bevel profile (X-groove).
- Tooling Management: Change, index, and monitor the condition of carbide milling cutters. Ensure tool wear does not exceed limits to prevent burrs or inaccurate bevel angles.
- Dimensional Verification: Use specialized gauges and micrometres to verify the Bevel Angle, Root Face (Land), and Total Plate Width every few plates or as per the ITP & Work instruction.
- Edge Quality Control: Inspect milled edges for surface defects, tears, or steps that could lead to weld lack-of-fusion or slag inclusions.
- Material Alignment: Oversee the automated plate clamping and centring systems to ensure the plate is perfectly parallel to the milling heads.
Technical Skill Set
- CNC Operation: Proficiency in HMI panels (Siemens, Fanuc, or Mitsubishi) used by machine manufacturers like Linsinger or SMS Group.
- Measurement Tools: Expert use of bevel protractors and digital callipers.
- Blueprint Reading: Ability to interpret Edge Preparation from process charts, WPS for different pipe thicknesses and grades (X52 to X80).
- Basic Maintenance: Ability to perform daily lubrication, chip conveyor cleaning, and minor hydraulic troubleshooting.
Key Qualifications
- Education: ITI (Fitter/Machinist) or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
- Experience: 3-8 years of experience specifically in Edge Milling or large-scale CNC machining within a pipe mill (LSAW/HSAW).
- Physical Stamina: Ability to manage heavy tooling changes and work in a high-noise, industrial environment on rotational shifts.
Preferred Attributes (Global Standards)
- Understanding that the quality of the edge directly impacts the Ultrasonic Testing (UT) success rate after welding.
- Efficient handling of steel chips/swarf for recycling and maintaining a clean work area (5S).
- Strict adherence to machine guarding protocols and Lock-Out Tag-Out (LOTO) during cutter changes.
