Curriculum and Instructor Role
Our project-based curriculum is based on the principle of having instructors provide structure while students provide content. This involves discussion with students 1) about criteria for creating or choosing targeted content, and 2) about criteria used in assessment of demonstrated language ability in relation to thelanguage level benchmarks specified in the curriculum. Articulation of these criteria is done by students, helped along as needed by guiding questions from the instructor (rather than prescribed top-down by the instructor. As students supply more and more content, lesson planning becomes necessarily less detailed while in class, the instructor focuses more on immediate, opportunistic exploitation of student contributions (often based on homework assignments or in-class group and pair work) that arise spontaneously during the course of a class and offer targeted learning opportunities. Instructors will engage in reflection -- personal as well as peer and coordinator observation and analysis to help develop more ways to have their classroom activities incorporate student produced or identified ideas/materials. Instructors do ongoing formative assessment of student learning which should lead to documented prescriptive suggestions and follow up.
