Job Purpose:

  • The General Curator is responsible for all Life Sciences operations in the Corallium: Marine Life Institute including the care, procurement, maintenance, and well-being of all animals under the facilities care.
  • This individual is responsible for ensuring accuracy in record keeping, disease prevention and the development and maintenance of world-class exhibits.
  • The role is responsible for training staff and promoting the on-going education within their team. The role will promote good business practices with special focus on achieving the highest possible standards of service excellence and animal care.
  • They will ensure the highest level of guest service with regard to safety, courtesy, education, and efficiency.
  • They will keep the Director informed of departmental readiness and/or issues including developing and controlling departmental budget elements.
  • This position will work closely with the Associate Director of Dive & Underwater Tourism Development to enhance project outcomes. This is a working curatorial position.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead, support and manage Life Sciences including research, facility maintenance, animal welfare through the management of staff members, interns, volunteers and researchers.
  • Manage and maintain the daily husbandry operations adhering to Red Sea Global standards and protocols.
  • Oversee water chemistry and animal welfare of collection.
  • Participate in field coral, fish, and rescue activities by boat including transporting final coral product to Grand Reveal and other habitat exhibits.
  • Build and manage recruitment of operational team and work with in-house departments to ensure smooth on-boarding processes.
  • Develop marine life facility and animal handling related operational protocols and standard operation procedures using on-site leadership in maintaining standards.
  • Assist in the design, development, and operation of all RSG Marine Life related projects, collaborating closely with other members of the team to ensure the inclusion of other disciplines such as, Diving and Underwater Tourism related elements.
  • Working alongside and supporting all RSG departments during Delivery stage to ensure their targets achieved, operational phasing is initiated when required and projects are delivered as designed.
  • Work with RSG and RSZA departments to ensure alignment with sensitive and high-profile environmental issues in the development and operation of Marine Life or Underwater Tourism related assets.
  • Assist in pre-opening preparation plan of the Corallium: Marine Life Institute working with on-site Marine Life Development and Delivery Teams in co-ordination of delivery.
  • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert in Marine Life Operations.
  • Demonstrate a friendly, helpful and cheerful attitude while communicating effectively with our guests and fellow team members.
  • Represent & promote the Corallium: Marine Life Institute in a positive manner to maintain a professional image for the company and the facility.
  • Actively listen to guest and management feedback, requests and concerns to act in an ethical, effective and timely manner to exceed their expectations.
  • Ensure the compliance of company and facility specific policies and procedures.
  • Consult with local and international authorities in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Collaborate with external organizations, conservation oriented bodies and strategic partners.
  • Lead and coordinate activities of staff engaged in the inventory, care, feeding and delivery of animals.
  • Review and oversee all medical treatments as required.
  • Review and monitor all animal necropsy and veterinarian site visit reports.
  • Serve as Corallium: Marine Life Institute representative to professional agencies, institutions and various committees.
  • Perform public relations or conservation functions associated with the department, facility and company as requested.
  • Constantly strive to improve animal exhibits and animal care standards.
  • Coordinate with support departments for the maintenance and operation of life support systems and other technical systems.
  • Monitor the Life Sciences inventory and departmental expenditure to reduce loss, waste and control costs.
  • Proactively assist in the implementation of new exhibits and educational opportunities to optimize revenues and guest experience.
  • Actively seek and implement cost saving programs for the facility to operate as efficiently as possible.
  • Ensure actual expenses do not exceed the department budget.
  • Assist legal or environmental to obtain permits or licenses from the appropriate authorities for all animal and plant related activities.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of exhibits, including comprehensive review and improvement.
  • Understand, follow and enforce all standard operating procedures to exceed the operational requirements and ensure guests always receive the highest standards of quality and service.
  • Lead and manage department and company objectives and key performance indicators.
  • Manage emergency situations to minimize damage, loss or injury to guests, team members, animals or company property.
  • Conduct inspections of animal facilities to ensure the required sanitation standards; observe and report noticeable or unusual changes in animal behaviour or illnesses and assist veterinarians in health and surveillance of animals.
  • Ensure that all proper records (I.e., animal inventory, animal health, mortalities list, and animal dispositions) are accurate and maintained.
  • Attend training and development programs to promote personal and career growth.
  • Train team members and equip them with the necessary skills, knowledge and attitude to perform the job effectively and deliver memorable experiences using high quality training and evaluation programs for life sciences staff.
  • Conduct life sciences team member performance appraisals in a timely, fair and constructive manner to promote personal and career growth including coaching or discipline in a fair and consistent manner to motivate and improve performance.
  • To motivate and empower all team members to perform at their absolute best through role modelling, providing feedback, rewarding and recognizing, respecting and frequently communicating to reduce turnover and increase retention.


Job Requirements:


Qualifications & Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years (10 years + preferred) experience in life science or animal welfare management, including oversight of both direct and indirect reports and project
  • Degree in wildlife/marine biology or relevant work experience.
  • Proven aptitude for developing compelling exhibits.
  • Animal Husbandry, Life Support, Zoo Licensing & Veterinary Practices in a public aquarium setting
  • Working with relevant authorities and accrediting associations.
  • Excellent time management as well as written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience in managing a team.
  • Demonstration of leadership, strong people skills, and strong communication skills.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Competency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • PADI Divemaster or equivalent (Preferred)

Job Context:


This is a 'Front of House' and Back of House position with direct guest contact and constant interaction with staff and contractors. The requirements will entail working during operating hours and occasionally outside normal facility operating hours on an as-needed basis.


As the facility will not be operational at time of employment, the position holder will have to implement all pre-operational requirements, including but not limited to:

  • Setting up of the facility.
