Job Description

Executive Search Brief: General Manager (Greenfield Startup – Egypt)

Target Candidate Profile The ideal candidate is a pioneer-operator—a professional who balances the high-level strategic requirements of a global multinational with the hands-on, resourceful mindset needed to build a manufacturing facility from the ground up in an emerging market.

1. Professional Experience

  • Greenfield & Startup Mastery: Proven track record of setting up industrial facilities (preferably in packaging, apparel trims, or fast-moving manufacturing) from technical installation through to full production.
  • Regional Expertise: Minimum 10+ years in leadership roles within North Africa (e.g., Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt). Must demonstrate a deep understanding of local labor relations, bureaucratic navigation, and business etiquette.
  • Multinational (MNC) Fluency: Experience reporting into an international matrix structure, ensuring local operations align with global corporate governance, ESG standards, and reporting cycles.
  • Commercial Transition: Demonstrated ability to pivot from a Technical/Project Manager focus during setup to a Commercial/Sales Leader role once production is stable.

2. Educational Background

  • Primary Degree: Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Industrial, or Chemical) or Business Administration.
  • Advanced Degree: An MBA or Master's in International Management is highly preferred to manage the complexity of P&L and global stakeholder expectations.
  • Linguistic Proficiency:
  • English: Full professional proficiency (corporate reporting language).
  • French: Highly desirable for North African business and legal environments.
  • Arabic: A significant advantage for shop-floor leadership and local networking.

3. Key Characteristics & Competencies

  • Cultural Intelligence (CQ): The ability to bridge the gap between Global HQ expectations and local cultural nuances. This person must lead with empathy but maintain strict corporate discipline.
  • Resilience & Agility: Comfortable with ambiguity and the inevitable friction of emerging market logistics (e.g., customs delays, utility instabilities, or regulatory shifts).
  • Hands-on Leadership: Willingness to be on the factory floor during the installation phase, while possessing the gravitas to negotiate with global brand procurement directors.
  • High Integrity: Unwavering commitment to international compliance and ethical standards, particularly in environments where local practices may diverge from corporate policy.

4. Search Focus & Competitive Targets

  • Industry Targets: Candidates currently in senior roles within CCL Label, Avery Dennison, SML, or adjacent sectors like specialized automotive components or high-end industrial packaging.
  • The Ideal Catch: A North African Expat returning home after a successful career in Europe/Turkey, or a local National who has climbed the ranks of a Tier-1 global manufacturing firm.

Job description; Expectations:

I. Project Phase: Plant Setup & Operational Readiness

  • Infrastructure Management: Oversee the technical outfitting, installation, and commissioning of production lines within the existing entity.
  • Facility Integration: Coordinate with the host entity to align on shared resources (utilities, security, logistics) while maintaining the specific standards of the new business line.
  • Supply Chain Localization: Identify and vet local raw material suppliers and service providers to optimize the local supply chain.
  • Staffing & Training: Recruit a core technical and administrative team; implement specialized training programs to meet global quality benchmarks.

II. Operational Phase: Production & Quality Excellence

  • Process Stabilization: Lead the transition from machine installation to consistent, high-yield manufacturing.
  • Quality Systems Management: Implement and maintain rigorous quality control protocols (e.g., color inspection, durability testing) required for apparel labeling.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all production activities meet local labor laws, environmental regulations, and corporate ESG standards.
  • P&L Accountability: Manage the initial startup budget and transition to full profit-and-loss responsibility for the local business unit.

III. Commercial Phase: Business Development & Key Account Management

  • Global Account Management: Serve as the primary local point of contact for globally contracted brand owners, ensuring their technical and delivery requirements are met.
  • Sales Lead Generation: Proactively identify and secure new business opportunities within the regional apparel and textile market.
  • Market Positioning: Develop and execute a regional commercial strategy to expand the brand's footprint in Egypt.
  • Stakeholder Liaison: Maintain strong relationships with the parent company, the host entity management, and local government bodies.

IV. Leadership & Culture

  • Strategic Vision: Translate global corporate objectives into actionable local milestones.
  • Organizational Development: Foster a high-performance culture focused on safety, efficiency, and continuous improvement.
  • Risk Management: Identify and mitigate operational or commercial risks inherent in a greenfield startup environment.
