Job Summary
The GIS Specialist is responsible for supporting the operation, maintenance, analysis, and continuous improvement of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial databases. The role includes data management, spatial analysis, quality assurance, and supporting GIS applications and services in alignment with project objectives and digital transformation initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
1. GIS Operations & Support
- Operate and maintain GIS platforms, applications, and services.
- Provide technical support for GIS users and stakeholders.
- Monitor system performance and ensure high availability.
2. Spatial Data Management
- Manage, update, and maintain spatial databases.
- Perform data entry, validation, and integrity checks.
- Ensure proper versioning and backup of geospatial data.
3. Spatial Analysis & Mapping
- Conduct spatial analysis to support decision-making.
- Produce maps, dashboards, and geospatial reports.
- Support planning, infrastructure, and municipal services analysis.
4. Data Quality Assurance (QA/QC)
- Implement data quality control procedures.
- Validate spatial data accuracy and consistency.
- Ensure compliance with GIS standards and specifications.
5. Database Maintenance
- Support upgrading, tuning, and maintaining spatial databases.
- Perform database optimization and performance monitoring.
- Assist in data migration and integration tasks.
6. GIS Services & Applications
- Support GIS web services and enterprise applications.
- Assist in operating unified geospatial data platforms.
- Ensure smooth functioning of electronic GIS services.
7. Documentation & Reporting
- Document workflows, processes, and technical procedures.
- Prepare periodic reports on system performance and data status.
- Maintain metadata and GIS documentation.
8. Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with IT teams, developers, and business stakeholders.
- Participate in project planning and technical discussions.
- Provide training and guidance to end users when required.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education
- Bachelor's degree in:
- Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
- Geomatics / Surveying
- Geography
- Computer Science (with GIS specialization)
Experience
- 5+ years of experience in spatial data mapping, data conversion, migration, and ongoing maintenance of geospatial datasets.
- Experience in government or large-scale GIS environments is preferred.
Technical Skills
- Demonstrated hands-on experience with ESRI GIS platforms and tools (e.g., ArcGIS suite).
- Spatial Databases: PostgreSQL/PostGIS, Oracle Spatial, SQL Server
- Programming (preferred): Python, SQL
- Knowledge of GIS web services and APIs
- Experience with data QA/QC processes
