Job Description

Job Summary

The Geotechnical Lab Manager oversees the full operations of the geotechnical laboratory, ensuring all soil, aggregate, and material tests are conducted accurately, safely, and according to international standards. The role includes supervising lab technicians, maintaining equipment, ensuring quality control, and delivering reliable test results for geotechnical and construction projects.

Key Responsibilities

1. Laboratory Operations

Manage routine and advanced geotechnical testing such as:

Sieve Analysis

Atterberg Limits

Standard & Modified Proctor

Field Density Test (FDT)

CBR (California Bearing Ratio)

Unconfined Compression Test (UCT)

Triaxial Tests

Specific Gravity & Moisture Content

Consolidation Tests

Ensure proper sample preparation, handling, and storage.

Approve and verify all test reports before issuance.

2. Quality Control & Compliance

Ensure lab operations follow ASTM, BS, AASHTO, ISO, and local authority requirements.

Implement and monitor the Quality Management System (QMS).

Maintain calibration and preventive maintenance schedules for testing equipment.

Conduct internal audits and prepare for accreditation audits.

3. Team Leadership & Training

Supervise, train, and evaluate lab technicians and assistants.

Assign tasks and monitor performance.

Provide technical guidance and ensure safe working practices.

4. Reporting & Documentation

Review and sign off on daily test reports.

Maintain accurate documentation of samples, test results, equipment logs, and calibration records.

Prepare weekly and monthly laboratory performance summaries.

5. Client & Project Coordination

Communicate with clients, engineers, and site teams regarding test requirements.

Provide technical support and resolve test-related queries.

Coordinate with site teams for field sampling/testing requirements when needed.

6. Inventory & Resource Management

Manage procurement and inventory of lab consumables, chemicals, and equipment.

Ensure cost-effective use of resources.

Suggest improvements for lab efficiency and productivity.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, or related field.

37 years of experience in a geotechnical/materials testing lab.

Strong knowledge of geotechnical sampling, soil mechanics, and lab testing standards.

Experience in managing teams and lab operations.

Key Skills

Strong understanding of ASTM, AASHTO, and BS standards.

Excellent leadership and communication skills.

Strong documentation and reporting skills.

Ability to troubleshoot technical and equipment issues.

Proficiency in MS Office and lab software.
