Head of Design (AI Products)
About the Role
We're looking for an experienced Head of Design to build and lead a world-class design function for a portfolio of AI-native products. This is a rare opportunity to define how users interact with next-generation AI systems at scale, creating intuitive, trusted and impactful experiences.
You'll establish the design vision, build a high-performing team, and shape the product experience across multiple AI-powered applications. Working closely with Product and Engineering leadership, you'll ensure design is a strategic driver of innovation rather than simply a delivery function.
This role is ideal for someone who thrives in ambiguity, enjoys building teams and practices from the ground up, and is passionate about the future of AI-first product design.
Key Responsibilities
Design Leadership
- Define the overall design vision and quality standards across a portfolio of AI products.
- Build, mentor and lead a multidisciplinary design team including Product Designers, UX Researchers and Content Designers.
- Develop and scale a unified design system to ensure consistency across multiple products.
- Partner closely with Product and Engineering leaders to influence product strategy and roadmap decisions.
- Champion design excellence and embed user-centred thinking throughout the organisation.
AI Product Design
- Design intuitive AI-powered experiences including conversational interfaces, intelligent workflows and agentic systems.
- Create experiences that prioritise trust, transparency and human oversight.
- Leverage AI tools throughout the design lifecycle, from research and ideation through to prototyping and testing.
- Continuously explore emerging AI capabilities and incorporate best practices into the design function.
User Research
- Establish a robust research practice that informs product strategy and design decisions.
- Embed customer discovery and usability testing into every stage of product development.
- Develop feedback loops using qualitative research and product analytics to drive continuous improvement.
Design Systems & Operations
- Build and maintain scalable design systems, component libraries and design standards.
- Define efficient design operations, collaboration workflows and engineering handoff processes.
- Measure and improve design quality through clear metrics and continuous iteration.
What We're Looking For
- 10+ years of experience in Product Design, UX or Digital Design.
- 5+ years leading design teams within high-growth technology organisations.
- Proven experience building and scaling design functions from the ground up.
- Strong portfolio demonstrating exceptional product, interaction and visual design.
- Experience designing AI-powered products including conversational AI, automation, recommendation systems or agentic experiences.
- Deep expertise in design systems and scalable product design practices.
- Strong user research capabilities with a data-informed approach to design.
- Comfortable using modern AI tools within the design workflow.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience working in agile, fast-paced product environments.
Nice to Have
- Experience within AI-native or product-led technology companies.
- Background designing enterprise-scale or highly regulated products.
- Experience designing multilingual products.
- Knowledge of UX writing or content design for AI-generated experiences.
- Contributions to the wider design community through speaking, mentoring or open-source initiatives.
