General Description
The Health and Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring that the organization complies with occupational health and safety guidelines to protect the wellbeing of employees and visitors. This includes developing and implementing safety policies, conducting risk assessments, leading training initiatives, and investigating incidents.
The roles and responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
- Conduct regular workplace inspections and risk assessments.
- Develop, implement, and review health and safety policies and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with local and international safety regulations and standards (e.g., ISO).
- Provide health and safety training and induction programs for staff.
- Investigate accidents, near misses, and unsafe working conditions; recommend preventive actions.
- Maintain accurate health and safety records, including training logs, inspections, and incident reports.
- Collaborate with managers, supervisors, and workers to improve safety culture.
- Prepare reports and documentation for internal use and regulatory bodies.
- Promote safe work practices and lead toolbox talks and safety briefings.
- Assist in emergency preparedness planning and conduct emergency drills (e.g., fire, chemical spill, evacuation).
- Recommend the purchase and use of protective equipment and ensure its correct usage.
Qualifications & Experience
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in health and Safety role.
- Diploma or degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field.
- Proven experience in a similar health and safety role.
- Excellent knowledge of health and safety legislation and best practices.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Good communication, training, and interpersonal skills.
- High attention to detail and a proactive approach.
- Computer proficiency (MS Office, reporting software, incident tracking tools).
- First Aid, Fire Warden, or Emergency Response certification.
- Experience with Safety Management Systems
- Familiarity with auditing and inspection procedures.
