Testing & Commissioning Manager – (BESS & PCS Specialist)
Position Overview
This position is responsible for the end-to-end technical commissioning, integration, and grid compliance of Battery Energy Storage Systems in utility-scale renewable and hybrid power plants across projects. This role ensures that battery systems, PCS, BMS, EMS, safety systems, and auxiliary systems are commissioned safely, operate reliably and meet contractual performance, grid code and safety requirements prior to commercial operation.

This role ensures that battery systems, PCS, BMS, EMS, safety systems, and auxiliary systems are commissioned safely, operate reliably and meet contractual performance, grid code and safety requirements prior to commercial operation.
Detailed Core Responsibilities
- Engineering Review & Commissioning Readiness
- Review and provide inputs to Engineering team on BESS-related engineering documents based on experience like Performance parameter verification, Product limitations/challenges faced at site, Power quality aspects.
- Review OEM commissioning manuals, parameter sets, and limitations.
- Participate in FAT / integrated control simulations where applicable.
- Develop detailed commissioning procedures, test plans, method statements, and safety risk assessments.
- Installation Verification & Pre-Commissioning
- Verify correct installation and readiness of Battery racks, PCS, MV/LV station, HVAC
- Ensure compliance of battery installation with thermal and spacing requirements.
- Perform and supervise pre-commissioning checks of all equipment
- Ensure all statutory and safety approvals are in place prior to energization.
- BESS & PCS Testing & Commissioning Execution
- Responsible for testing, commissioning, and safety validation of Battery Energy Storage Systems and PCS in accordance with IEC 62933 series, IEC 62619, IEC 62477-1, UL 9540, UL 9540A, UL 1973, IEC 61000, any other relevant standards
- Lead step-by-step energization and commissioning activities:
- Validate correct configuration of SOC limits, Charge/Discharge limits, Protection
- Coordinate PCS commissioning with PPC/EMS team, Substation & SCADA team.
- Execute and validate functional tests including control modes, ramp rate etc.
- Validate EMS logic for applications like Peak Shaving, Frequency support
- Test grid-forming vs grid-following behavior (as per design).
- Support black start and islanded operation tests where contractually required.
- Validate operation of Fire detection and suppression systems
- BMS communication and hierarchy verification
- Communication integrity with PPC, SCADA, and grid systems
- Typical Troubleshooting Scope
- SOC imbalance between strings or racks
- PCS synchronization failures with grid or PPC, Unexpected PCS trips due to grid disturbances
- Battery derating due to thermal or BMS constraints
- EMS command mismatch or delayed response
- Communication failures (PCS–BMS–EMS–PPC)
- Analyze event logs, BMS data, PCS fault records, and oscillography.
- Identify systemic integration or control issues.
- Recommend corrective actions in coordination with OEMs and EPC.
- In-depth knowledge of Li-ion battery technologies and degradation behavior.
- Strong understanding of PCS topologies and grid interaction.
- Hands-on experience with EMS and plant-level control integration.
- Knowledge of grid ancillary services and hybrid plant dynamics.
- Strong safety leadership in high-energy systems.
- Ability to manage multi-OEM coordination on site.
- Excellent analytical and troubleshooting capability.
- Clear communication with grid utilities and internal stakeholders.
- Bachelor's degree in electrical / Power / Energy Engineering.
- 10–12 years of experience in: o BESS commissioning
- Hybrid renewable plants
- Grid-connected PCS systems
- Direct OEM commissioning exposure preferred.
- Certified training in battery safety and fire systems is an advantage.
