Job Description

Manager– Power Plant Control System (PPC) Specialist

Position Overview

This role is responsible for the configuration, testing, commissioning, and validation of the central plant control system, ensuring coordinated operation of all generation and compensation assets and full compliance with grid codes, dispatch instructions, and utility requirements.

This role acts as the final functional integrator of the plant.

Detailed Core Responsibilities

  • Control Philosophy & Engineering Review
  • Review PPC control philosophy and functional design documents.
  • Validate compliance with: o CEA / POSOCO / Local grid codes such as KSA, CEA, DEWA, EWEC etc
    • Utility dispatch and AGC requirements
  • Review signal lists, data mapping, and control hierarchies.
  • To review & suggest any modifications in the PPC control architecture to comply with the grid code, avoid any latency delays, etc.
  • Coordinate FAT for PPC logic and interfaces
  • PPC Configuration & Field Integration
  • Understand & Configure PPC setpoints, control mode and priorities.
  • Integrate PPC with: o Solar inverters
    • WTGs
    • BESS & STATCOM
    • Substation protection and metering
  • Ensure correct data integrity from field to PPC and SCADA.
  • Commissioning & Closed-Loop Testing
  • Perform open-loop and closed-loop control testing.
  • To Verify:
  • Sensitivity: L&T Construction Internal Use
    • Active power control (APC)
    • Reactive power / voltage control (RPC)
    • Ramp rate and power gradient control
    • Curtailment and dispatch commands
  • Validate loss of communication and fallback modes.
  • Grid Compliance & Acceptance Testing
  • Support AGC testing with grid operator.
  • Conduct grid compliance tests including: o Frequency response
    • Voltage control at PCC
    • Dynamic behavior under contingency events
  • Support grid audits, mock runs and final sign-off.
  • Documentation, Training & Handover
  • Prepare detailed commissioning test reports.
  • Upload final configuration backups and change records.
  • Provide training to O&M and control room teams.
  • Support early operational performance stabilization.
Testing, Commissioning & Troubleshooting

  • Responsible for testing and commissioning of plant-level control systems ensuring coordinated operation compliant with IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-104, IEC 61131-3, IEC 61970/61968, IEC 62351, any other relevant standards.

Key Tests

  • Signal accuracy and latency validation
  • Control loop stability and response tests
  • PPC-SCADA-EMS communication verification
  • Redundancy and failover testing

Key Troubleshooting Scope

  • Power mismatch between plant output and PPC dispatch
  • Oscillatory or unstable control behavior
  • Communication delays or data loss
  • Incorrect allocation of generation among assets
  • Sensitivity: L&T Construction Internal Use
  • Non-compliance during grid events
  • To identify any correction required in control logics to avoid any oscillation from plant.

Key Competencies & Skills

  • Deep understanding of power system control and grid integration.
  • Strong knowledge of renewable hybrid plant behavior.
  • Expertise in communication protocols (IEC-104, Modbus, IEC-61850, etc).
  • Analytical mindset with strong ownership accountability.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree – Electrical / Power / Control Engineering.
  • 8–15 years experience in PPC or plant-level control commissioning.
  • Grid compliance and AGC testing experience mandatory
