Job Description

What a MEMS Wafer Fab Metrology Engineer does at HP:

As a MEMS wafer fab POM metrology engineer, you will play a critical role in ensuring measurement capability, accuracy, and stability across the manufacturing process. You will be responsible for developing, sustaining, and optimizing metrology solutions that serve as the key quality gate for wafer fabrication, enabling high yield, process control, and successful New Product Introduction (NPI) for advanced HP inkjet technologies.

Key Responsibilities

Metrology Process Sustaining & NPI

  • Production sustaining: Manage and sustain POM metrology processes to ensure stable measurement performance, accurate data capture, and timely lot disposition. Support daily operations including excursion management and rapid troubleshooting.
  • Equipment sustaining: Work closely with equipment engineering teams on metrology tool troubleshooting, qualification, calibration, and upgrades across platforms such as Fogale and CyberOptics. Ensure tools meet accuracy, repeatability, and uptime requirements.
  • NPI: Develop, transfer, optimize, and qualify metrology recipes to support new product introduction (CR/CISS and future platforms). Conduct experiments, analyze results, and iterate measurement strategies to ensure robust process capability and yield ramp.

Measurement System Capability & Control

  • Drive measurement system integrity through GR&R, correlation, and tool matching across platforms. Establish SPC/SPACE compliance and ensure data quality for process control and decision-making.
  • Develop and standardize metrology procedures to ensure consistency, repeatability, and scalability across fab operations.

Business Continuity & Recipe Portability

  • Support metrology Business Continuity Planning (BCP), including N+1 capability development and recipe portability across different tool platforms.
  • Drive migration and standardization of recipes to reduce dependency on single tool types and strengthen operational robustness.

Metrology Improvement & CIP Projects

  • Lead Continuous Improvement Projects (CIP) to enhance measurement capability, cycle time, and automation. Drive projects such as tool verification & recovery procedures and metrology system enhancements.
  • Work closely with Process Integration, Process Module engineers, and WW teams to support yield improvement and process optimization initiatives.

Cross-functional Collaboration

  • Partner with Process, Equipment, Manufacturing, and Quality teams to align metrology requirements with process needs, ensuring convergence, standardization, and readiness for production ramp.

Individuals who do well in this role at HP, usually possess:

  • Bachelor or Master degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Engineering, Materials Science, or related discipline.
  • Proven experience (3–5 years) in semiconductor wafer fab or MEMS manufacturing environment, preferably in metrology or process engineering.
  • Strong understanding of metrology concepts including GR&R, SPC, SPACE, correlation, and data analysis.
  • Hands-on experience with optical or vision-based metrology systems (e.g., Fogale, CyberOptics, or equivalent) will be advantageous.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with ability to troubleshoot complex process and measurement issues.
  • Good project management skills including experiment planning, risk assessment, timeline management, and prioritization.
  • High degree of ownership and accountability with ability to manage both sustaining and development workstreams.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to work across cross-functional and global teams.
  • Agile and adaptable mindset to support fast-paced NPI and high-volume manufacturing environment.
  • Self-driven, result-oriented, and a strong team player.
  • Able to work in cleanroom environment.
  • Able to support overseas collaboration/travel when required.
