Job Description

Job Purpose

The Neurosurgery Registrar is responsible for providing highquality clinical care in the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of patients with neurosurgical conditions. The role involves supporting Consultants in operative and nonoperative care, performing duties within granted privileges, and contributing to continuous improvement in patient services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide medical and surgical care for neurosurgical patients under the supervision of a Consultant.
  • Perform initial assessment of patients, request investigations, interpret results, and develop treatment plans within approved clinical privileges.
  • Conduct daily rounds on admitted patients, ensuring timely documentation and updating progress notes.
  • Assist Consultants during neurosurgical procedures and perform minor procedures independently as permitted.
  • Monitor patient progress and promptly communicate any significant changes to the Consultant.
  • Respond to emergency neurosurgical and trauma calls, including acute head injuries, CNS emergencies, and spine trauma.
  • Participate in the management of outpatient clinics when assigned, following the department's schedule.
  • Ensure accurate documentation in electronic medical records, including admission notes, discharge summaries, and operative reports.
  • Obtain informed consent for appropriate procedures in accordance with clinical policies.
  • Cooperate with nursing staff, therapists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure integrated patient care.
  • Participate in oncall duties as per the departmental rota.
  • Adhere to clinical guidelines, protocols, and pathways related to neurosurgery.
  • Engage in departmental quality improvement activities.
  • Support the education and supervision of junior doctors, interns, and trainees.
  • Participate in morbidity and mortality meetings, case discussions, and academic activities.
  • Contribute to patient and family education about disease conditions, treatment options, and preventive measures.
  • Maintain professional conduct and ensure ethical standards are followed at all times.
  • Perform any additional responsibilities aligned with the role and clinical competence.

Requirements

Education

  • Medical degree (M.B.B.S. or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
  • Completion of internship and residency training in neurosurgery.

Experience

  • At least 23 years of clinical experience in neurosurgery after completing residency.
  • Experience in managing neurosurgical emergencies and assisting in major neurosurgical procedures.
  • Subspecialty exposure or structured training is preferred.

Licensure & Certifications

  • Board Membership, Fellowship, or equivalent qualification in Neurosurgery (preferred).
  • Valid professional license from the country of origin and eligible for local regulatory licensing.
