Job Description

Job Purpos

The Paper Conservator is responsible for the conservation, preservation, and restoration of paper-based cultural heritage materials, including manuscripts, books, prints, drawings, maps, photographs, and archival documents. The position involves assessment, treatment, documentation, preventive conservation, and advisory work to ensure the long-term preservation of collections in accordance with international conservation ethics and standards.

Key Result Areas

  • Examine and assess the condition of paper-based objects and collections.
  • Design and carry out conservation and restoration treatments using appropriate, reversible, and well-documented methods.
  • Prepare detailed written and photographic documentation before, during, and after treatment.
  • Conduct preventive conservation activities, including recommendations on storage, handling, exhibition, environmental conditions, and integrated pest management.
  • Advise on exhibition preparation, mounting, framing, and display of paper materials.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness and response for collections at risk (e.g. water, fire, mold damage).
  • Collaborate with curators, archivists, librarians, scientists, and other conservators.
  • Contribute to collection surveys, risk assessments, and conservation planning.
  • Carry out or support research related to conservation materials, techniques, and historical paper technologies.
  • Ensure compliance with professional ethics, health and safety regulations, and institutional policies.
  • When required, assist with training, capacity building, or supervision of interns and technicians.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Degree in Conservation with specialization in paper conservation from a recognized program.
  • Demonstrated practical experience in the conservation of paper-based materials.
  • Strong knowledge of paper, inks, pigments, adhesives, and conservation materials.
  • Familiarity with international conservation standards and ethical guidelines 
  • Excellent documentation and report-writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
