Job Description

Job Summary:

  • The job holder is responsible for assessing and underwriting new business, endorsements and renewals in accordance with the established company procedures and standards up to the assigned limit.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Analyze property insurance applications to determine the level of risk.
  • Review construction type, occupancy, protection, fire hazards, geographic factors, and historical losses.
  • Conduct site inspections (directly or viareports) to validate risk quality.
  • Evaluate engineering surveys, catastrophemodeling outputs, and risk improvement requirements.
  • Determine appropriate premium, deductibles,terms, and conditions based on risk appetite.
  • Ensure alignment with underwritingguidelines, actuarial pricing models, and portfolio strategy.
  • Balance competitiveness with profitability.
  • Manage a portfolio of risks to ensurehealthy loss ratios and profitability.
  • Monitor exposure concentrations (e.g.,natural catastrophe zones).
  • Accept, decline, or modify submissions basedon risk analysis.
  • Clearly document underwriting rationale foraudit and regulatory purposes.
  • Work within delegated authority limits;escalate when required.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers, agents, and key accounts.
  • Negotiate terms to win and retain profitable business.
  • Provide guidance on risk improvements and mitigation measures.
  • Adhere to internal underwriting guidelines, reinsurance requirements, and regulatory standards.
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure audit readiness.
  • Engage in regular internal reviews to strengthen underwriting discipline.
  • Work with claims teams to analyze loss trends and adjust underwriting approach.
  • Coordinate with actuarial, finance, and risk engineering teams for pricing and risk insights.
  • Support product development and improvements in underwriting tools or models.
  • Provide management with timely and accurate portfolio performance reports.
  • Recommend corrective actions where needed.
  • Support training of junior underwriters.
  • Share technical knowledge and best practices.
  • Help build a high-performing underwriting culture.

Education, Experience and Formal/Professional Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree preferably in Science, Insurance, Risk management, Accountancy, Law.
  • Insurance certification from any accredited institute preferable.
  • Minimum 5 years of underwriting experience.
  • Proven ability in underwriting Property, organizing workload under pressure.
