The Opportunity
The Pulp Mill Supervisor is responsible and accountable for all Shift Virgin and Recycle Pulping operations, personnel, safety, environmental impact, cost center, quality, and production efforts. Manages the area shift operations to produce quality products in a safe, productive, and cost-efficient manner. Reporting Relationship: This position reports directly to PulpRecycle Operations Manager and indirectly to the PulpRecycle Assistant Operations Manager.
How You Will Impact WestRock
- Manages and monitors shift area safety activities.
- Review of production and quality results on a daily basis.
- Manage shift production resources and interface with other departments to maintain efficient mill operations.
- Participation in the mill shift production meetings, reporting on safety, quality, productivity, and environmental concerns.
- Manages the shift hourly work force in the Virgin and Recycle Pulping departments to ensure consistency in the execution of labor agreements.
- Ensures proper company/ union relations according to current labor contract.
- Maintains department's role in the Mill's ISO certification.
- Work with Mill Productivity Improvement Process Teams.
Safety
- Actively promotes and participates in all elements of the Mill's safety program.
- Understands and enforces Mahrt safety policies and procedures; ensuring that all department personnel are aware of and adhere to safety policies and procedures.
- Ensures timely completion accident/incident investigation on all events occurring in PulpRecycle Operational areas.
- On a shift basis manages departmental housekeeping and safety related inspections. Ensures any deficiencies are addressed in a timely manner.
- Maintains Process Safety Management (PSM) within department for covered processes.
- Maintains departmental compliance with OSHA Batch Digester Over-pressurization Directives.
- Is the leader in the daily safety communications and programs with the hourly workforce.
Quality
- Understands his/her role with respect to WestRock Quality Policies and applies these principles daily.
- Awareness of Internal Customer Requirements and Specializations for quality parameters.
- Actively promotes use of Management Operation System (MOS) guidelines.
- Maintains area operations under ISO program.
- Proactive communications with internal customers on area product quality(pulpliquor urpentine).
- Implementation of recommendations from various diagnostic teams to help improve cost and quality.
Production/ Mill Reliability
- Manage all shift opportunities within the Pulp MillRecycle to ensure consistent fiber supply to paper machines.
- Minimize unexpected downtime in the area by effective maintenance and operations.
- Safely and efficiently execute area outage plans.
- Conduct safe, successful annual outages and scheduled startups within the PulpRecycle operational area.
- Communicate with other mill department shift managers to maximize mill safety, costs, and productivity.
- Ensure department is operating in a safe, productive, and cost-efficient manner.
Cost
- Manage operating and maintenance costs within the department to meet the monthly/yearly budget.
- Understand and manage department key cost drivers for processes and work with mill shift management to operate entire mill to minimize total cost of paper produced.
Environmental
- Understand and abide by environmental policies established by MWV, and state and Federal environmental laws.
- Report any environmental excursions.
- Actively manage department water usage.
- Promote Root Cause Analysis on any environmental event.
MOS, People, Organizational Effectiveness
- Daily promote Management Operation System (MOS).
- Continue to develop effective training and special assignments for team members.
- Follows communication guideline as outlined by Operations Manager for departments.
- Abides by current union-management labor agreements.
- Constructively work with other mill departments on all levels to develop entire mill solutions to issues and routine operations.
Performance Criteria
- Establish high level of performance by setting key shift goals and objectives.
- Adhere to MOS responsibilities and performance within department.
What You Will Need To Succeed
- A college degree is strongly recommended or a minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience in Fiber line related position.
- General understanding of mill wide operations and interdependency.
- Understanding the MWV Quality Policy and Environmental Policy.
- Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively with all levels of the organization.
- Must be able to clearly define objectives and be effective in involving other in achievement of those objectives.
- Must be dedicated to continuous improvements in the Fiber line department with special emphasis on safety, quality, environment, production, and cost.
- Available, as needed, outside of normal working hours if department or mill issues arise.
