Job Description
The Refrigeration Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of refrigeration systems. The ideal candidate has strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills specific to refrigeration systems, and takes pride in quality, safe, hands-on work.
Key ResponsibilitiesInstallation & Commissioning
• Install refrigeration systems per approved drawings and specifications
• Run and connect refrigerant piping, electrical wiring, and controls wiring for refrigeration systems
• Do pressure test, evacuate, charge, startup and test refrigeration systems per procedure
Maintenance & Repair
• Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on condensing units and central rack systems (compressors, condensers, evaporators, valves, controls)
• Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and refrigerant-related faults on refrigeration systems
• Respond to breakdowns and emergency service calls on refrigeration systems, including after-hours support as needed
Documentation & Communication
• Complete service reports, maintenance logs, and work orders accurately and on time
• Record refrigerant usage and rack/condensing unit system readings per compliance requirements
• Communicate system status, issues, and repair recommendations to supervisors and project engineers
• Coordinate with the project engineer during installation and commissioning phases
Required Qualifications• High school diploma or equivalent; technical/vocational training in HVAC-R preferred
• 2–5+ years of hands-on experience with commercial refrigeration, specifically condensing units and central/parallel rack systems
• Working knowledge of condensing unit and rack system operation, refrigeration cycles, and electrical/mechanical systems
• Ability to read and follow piping schematics, wiring diagrams, and rack control panel layouts
• Comfortable using hand tools, power tools, gauges, and diagnostic equipment
• Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and in cold/refrigerated environments
• Valid driver's license
Preferred Qualifications• Experience with rack control systems (Emerson, Carel, Danfoss etc.)
• Experience with supermarket, convenience store, or retail refrigeration systems
• Welding or brazing certification
Working Conditions• Primarily on-site/field-based work at retail stores, warehouses, or client facilities
• Exposure to machine rooms, refrigerated spaces, and rooftop equipment
• May require on-call availability and after-hours emergency response
• Some travel between job sites may be required
