Qatar University Profile:
Qatar University is the premier national institution of higher education with a mission to produce well-rounded graduates with academic knowledge of quality and excellence coupled with a keen spirit of volunteerism and civic responsibility. This is underpinned by committed leadership and an experienced and motivated faculty and staff body.
Department Profile:
Environmental Science Center (ESC), Qatar University
Qatar's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) covers an area nearly three times larger than its landmass, highlighting its strategic importance to the nation. The country's coastal region hosts rich and diverse ecosystems-mangrove forests, seagrass meadows, and coral reefs-that support ecological integrity, cultural heritage, and national sustainability goals. Safeguarding the health of these marine ecosystems and maintaining high water-quality standards are essential priorities, particularly in the face of rapid coastal development and anticipated extreme climate scenarios.
The Environmental Science Center (ESC) at Qatar University conducts advanced, multidisciplinary research addressing these challenges. ESC's work focuses on climate-change impacts-including rising sea temperatures, sea-level rise, marine heatwaves, pollution, and ocean acidification-and on understanding how large-scale coastal developments alter the hydro-morpho-dynamics of Qatar's marine environment. Through long-term monitoring, real-time measurements, modeling, and the integration of artificial intelligence techniques, ESC provides baseline data, diagnoses environmental issues, designs mitigation strategies, and informs key national stakeholders.
The successful candidate is expected to:
Investigate climate change impacts on the marine ecosystem of Qatar, particularly related to temperature rise, sea-level changes, marine heatwaves, pollution, and acidification.
Identify the sources, fate, and transport pathways of marine pollutants within Qatar's EEZ.
Examine the occurrence, distribution, and toxicity of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and emerging contaminants across different environmental matrices.
Assess how natural and anthropogenic stressors affect key marine habitats such as mangroves, coral reefs, and seagrass beds.
Contribute to the creation of an operational forecasting system for the Arabian Gulf / Qatar EEZ that integrates AI-based prediction tools with numerical ocean models.
Investigate summer hypoxia, mesoscale eddies, biogeochemical interactions, and circulation patterns in the Arabian Gulf.
Work closely with interdisciplinary teams of marine scientists.
Participate in research cruises, fieldwork campaigns, and national environmental monitoring programs.
Publish research findings in high-impact journals and prepare competitive research proposals, reports, and scientific deliverables.
This position directly contributes to Qatar University's mission to advance environmental knowledge, protect marine resources, and support national sustainability strategies. The successful candidate will play a key role in generating actionable scientific insights that guide policy, conservation initiatives, and marine resource management in Qatar and the wider Arabian Gulf region.
