About the Role
The Senior Animal Keeper – Wildlife Rescue Centre is responsible for the daily supervision of animal care operations within the Wildlife Rescue Centre and for ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare, husbandry, rehabilitation support, safety, biosecurity, and team performance.
The role provides practical leadership to animal care staff and serves as the primary operational supervisor for wildlife husbandry activities. The Senior Animal Keeper ensures that rescued, confiscated, orphaned, surrendered, injured, and rehabilitating wildlife receive professional care while maintaining safe zoological operations and compliance with established procedures.
The position plays a critical role in establishing a strong culture of animal welfare excellence, operational discipline, accountability, and safety throughout the facility.
Key Responsibilities
Animal Care and Husbandry
- Oversee the daily care and management of animals housed within the Wildlife Rescue Centre.
- Ensure high standards of husbandry, sanitation, nutrition, enrichment, and welfare are consistently maintained.
- Monitor animal behavior, health, and welfare and promptly report concerns.
- Ensure habitats, holding areas, rehabilitation spaces, and quarantine facilities remain clean, safe, and suitable for the species being housed.
- Support rehabilitation plans and contribute to successful release, transfer, or long-term placement outcomes.
- Ensure animals receive species-appropriate care based on established husbandry protocols.
Wildlife Rehabilitation Support
- Assist veterinary and rehabilitation personnel in the treatment and recovery of animals.
- Monitor animals undergoing rehabilitation and maintain detailed records of progress.
- Support pre-release conditioning programs where required.
- Observe behavioral indicators that may influence rehabilitation and release decisions.
- Assist with animal transfers, releases, and transportation activities.
Team Leadership and Supervision
- Supervise the daily activities of Animal Keepers and Animal Care Assistants.
- Allocate tasks and monitor completion of daily operational responsibilities.
- Ensure consistent adherence to husbandry, safety, welfare, and biosecurity standards.
- Provide coaching, mentoring, and practical guidance to team members.
- Support onboarding and training of new staff.
- Foster a culture of teamwork, professionalism, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Safety in Zoological Operations
- Ensure safe working practices are followed at all times.
- Lead by example in maintaining professional animal handling standards.
- Verify compliance with approved safe operating procedures and risk assessments.
- Ensure staff understand and follow containment, lock management, animal transfer, and emergency procedures.
- Conduct routine inspections of animal facilities, equipment, barriers, locks, and operational areas.
- Immediately address unsafe conditions and report safety concerns.
- Participate in incident investigations and corrective action implementation.
- Assist with emergency animal response activities when required.
Animal Welfare
- Promote a welfare-first approach to all animal management practices.
- Conduct routine welfare observations and support welfare assessment programs.
- Identify and address environmental, behavioral, nutritional, or management factors affecting welfare.
- Ensure enrichment programs are implemented consistently.
- Work closely with veterinary staff to support welfare improvement initiatives.
- Advocate for best-practice animal care standards throughout the Centre.
Biosecurity and Quarantine
- Ensure strict adherence to quarantine and biosecurity procedures.
- Support disease prevention, infection control, and hygiene programs.
- Ensure staff follow appropriate PPE requirements and sanitation protocols.
- Monitor animal areas for signs of illness or biosecurity concerns.
- Assist with implementation of isolation and containment procedures when required.
Records and Documentation
- Maintain accurate daily records relating to animal care, feeding, behavior, training, enrichment, welfare, and husbandry activities.
- Support animal inventory management and reporting.
- Ensure husbandry logs and operational documentation are completed accurately and on time.
- Contribute information for reports, audits, inspections, and operational reviews.
Facility and Equipment Management
- Ensure animal facilities, holding areas, equipment, and resources are maintained in a safe and operational condition.
- Conduct routine inspections of animal areas and equipment.
- Report maintenance requirements and operational concerns promptly.
- Assist with procurement planning and inventory monitoring.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness and workplace organization.
Public, Regulatory and Stakeholder Support
- Assist with inspections, audits, and regulatory reviews.
- Support educational activities, media opportunities, and stakeholder visits when required.
- Represent the Wildlife Rescue Centre professionally at all times.
- Support collaboration with veterinary teams, conservation partners, and government agencies as required.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Zoology, Animal Science, Wildlife Management, Conservation Biology, Veterinary Technology, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of experience caring for wildlife, zoological species, exotic animals, or rehabilitation animals.
- Demonstrated experience working in professional animal care environments.
- Experience supervising or mentoring animal care staff.
- Experience implementing safe animal handling and husbandry procedures
Desirable
- Advanced training in wildlife management, dangerous animal handling, rehabilitation, or animal welfare.
- Professional certifications related to zoological operations, wildlife rehabilitation, animal training, or occupational safety.
- Experience within a zoo, wildlife park, rescue centre, rehabilitation facility, sanctuary, or conservation organization.
- Experience working with confiscated, rescued, injured, orphaned, or rehabilitating wildlife.
- Experience managing quarantine facilities and biosecurity programs.
- Experience with dangerous animal operations and emergency animal response.
