The RoleWe are seeking an experienced Senior Dangerous Goods Specialist to lead dangerous goods compliance, classification, documentation, packaging, labeling, transportation requirements, operational controls, training, audits, and risk management across logistics activities.
The ideal candidate will provide specialist guidance on the safe and compliant movement of dangerous goods by applicable transportation modes, working closely with logistics providers, warehouse teams, carriers, suppliers, customers, regulators, and internal stakeholders to prevent incidents and ensure regulatory requirements are consistently met.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and implement dangerous goods policies, standards, procedures, and compliance frameworks.
- Establish controls for the classification, packaging, labeling, marking, documentation, handling, storage, and transportation of dangerous goods.
- Provide specialist advice on dangerous goods requirements across air, sea, road, rail, and multimodal transportation where applicable.
- Interpret applicable dangerous goods regulations, technical instructions, codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Monitor changes to dangerous goods regulations and assess their operational impact.
- Translate regulatory changes into updated procedures, training requirements, operational controls, and documentation.
- Classify dangerous goods according to applicable regulatory frameworks and transport requirements.
- Review Safety Data Sheets, technical specifications, product information, and other documentation required for classification.
- Determine appropriate dangerous goods descriptions, classifications, packing groups, labels, marks, and transport requirements.
- Review dangerous goods declarations and shipping documentation for completeness and accuracy.
- Establish requirements for shipper's declarations, transport documents, manifests, emergency information, and other required records.
- Review dangerous goods documentation prepared by suppliers, warehouses, freight forwarders, carriers, and internal teams.
- Ensure dangerous goods shipments meet applicable packaging requirements.
- Review packaging specifications, packaging approvals, compatibility, quantity limitations, and performance requirements.
- Ensure packages are appropriately marked and labeled before transportation.
- Establish controls for overpacks, combination packages, limited quantities, excepted quantities, and other applicable shipment categories.
- Assess requirements for radioactive, infectious, corrosive, flammable, toxic, oxidizing, explosive, and other regulated materials where applicable.
- Coordinate dangerous goods requirements for lithium batteries, dry ice, chemicals, fuels, aerosols, gases, laboratory materials, and other regulated products.
- Establish procedures for accepting dangerous goods shipments into warehouses and transportation networks.
- Develop dangerous goods acceptance-check processes and operational checklists.
- Review shipment eligibility, quantity limits, packaging requirements, documentation, and carrier restrictions before dispatch.
- Coordinate with carriers and freight forwarders regarding dangerous goods acceptance requirements and restrictions.
- Maintain approved-carrier and service-provider requirements for dangerous goods transportation.
- Conduct dangerous goods compliance assessments of logistics providers, warehouses, suppliers, and other partners.
- Monitor third-party provider performance against dangerous goods compliance standards and service requirements.
- Investigate dangerous goods shipment discrepancies, documentation errors, packaging failures, labeling issues, and transportation incidents.
- Lead or support investigations into dangerous goods spills, leaks, exposures, fires, misdeclarations, rejected shipments, and other incidents.
- Conduct root-cause analysis and develop corrective and preventive actions.
- Track corrective actions through closure and verify their effectiveness.
- Establish escalation procedures for dangerous goods emergencies and compliance incidents.
- Develop emergency-response procedures for spills, leaks, damaged packages, transportation accidents, exposure incidents, fires, and other hazardous-material events.
- Coordinate with Safety, Security, Emergency Response, Operations, and relevant authorities during dangerous goods incidents.
- Maintain dangerous goods emergency-response information and contact procedures.
- Support risk assessments for dangerous goods storage, handling, transportation, and operational processes.
- Identify hazards associated with dangerous goods movements and establish appropriate controls.
- Conduct route, mode, facility, and handling risk assessments for dangerous goods operations.
- Establish segregation and compatibility requirements for dangerous goods storage and handling.
- Ensure dangerous goods are stored in appropriate areas with suitable controls, signage, access restrictions, and emergency provisions.
- Coordinate warehouse requirements for hazardous materials, including segregation, ventilation, containment, fire protection, and spill-response arrangements where applicable.
- Review dangerous goods storage layouts and operational processes to identify safety and compliance risks.
- Develop and maintain dangerous goods SOPs, work instructions, checklists, and operational guidance.
- Provide specialist support for procurement and supplier onboarding involving dangerous goods.
- Review dangerous goods requirements during product launches, supplier changes, packaging changes, warehouse changes, and logistics-network redesign.
- Support new-product assessments to determine dangerous goods classification and transportation implications.
- Provide dangerous goods guidance for international shipments and cross-border logistics.
- Coordinate with customs, freight forwarders, carriers, brokers, and regulatory authorities on dangerous goods requirements.
- Support customs and regulatory documentation associated with hazardous or controlled materials.
- Maintain dangerous goods registers, classifications, approvals, shipping records, training records, incident records, and compliance documentation.
- Ensure dangerous goods information remains accurate, current, traceable, and accessible to authorized personnel.
- Establish document-control requirements for dangerous goods procedures and regulatory materials.
- Conduct periodic compliance audits, inspections, and operational reviews.
- Identify non-conformities and develop corrective action plans.

The successful candidate should have strong experience in dangerous goods, hazardous materials, hazardous chemicals, regulated logistics, transportation compliance, freight operations, warehouse safety, or supply chain compliance, preferably within logistics, aviation, shipping, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, energy, or other regulated environments.
The candidate should demonstrate:
- Strong knowledge of dangerous goods classification, packaging, labeling, marking, documentation, handling, storage, and transportation requirements.
- Experience working with dangerous goods regulations and applicable transportation-mode requirements.
- Strong understanding of Safety Data Sheets, technical specifications, product classifications, and hazardous-material information.
- Experience reviewing and preparing dangerous goods declarations and transport documentation.
- Knowledge of packaging requirements, quantity limitations, overpacks, limited quantities, and other shipment categories.
