The Impact You'll Make in this Role

As an MSSQL Senior Engineer, you will have the opportunity to apply your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people around the world. This position is part of the Core Infrastructure Delivery - Data Platform Delivery team. Under the general direction of the Global DB Services Manager, the successful candidate will participate in the daily management and administration of MSSQL databases. Key responsibilities include responding to incidents and change requests, monitoring MSSQL activities, troubleshooting issues as needed, and escalating critical issues to the appropriate teams. This role requires strong technical and communication skills, as well as the ability to work comfortably with diverse teams. Here, you will make an impact by:

  • Modernize and support enterprise database environments by developing automation, tools, and operational strategies for MSSQL, open-source, and cloud-native database technologies.
  • Implement, maintain, and optimize database server environments, including high availability, clustering, Always On, replication, and disaster recovery solutions for critical data and cloud databases.
  • Provide daily operational support by responding to incidents, managing planned project work, and collaborating with teams to ensure stable and efficient database services.
  • Maintain compliance, data protection, disaster recovery readiness, and audit requirements to ensure all controls and commitments are completed effectively.
  • Contribute to the future database vision for 3M by participating in Agile Scrum teams, representing database teams in cross-functional projects, and working closely with diverse stakeholders.


Your Skills and Expertise

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution, along with a minimum of seven (7) years of professional IT experience.
  • Minimum seven (7) years of experience supporting MSSQL database technologies on Windows OS, including stand-alone and HADR configurations, in a private, public, government, or military environment.
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience with database migrations to cloud environments, preferably AWS, and with high-availability solutions.
  • Experience in scripting using T-SQL.

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

  • Demonstrated experience working on technical projects in Agile environments, with strong documentation, process flow, and communication skills.
  • Hands-on experience with SQL Server upgrades and migrations, including working in large-scale environments and supporting customer-facing applications.
  • Strong technical expertise in T-SQL, PowerShell, or shell scripting, along with automation of DBA tasks such as installations and other operational processes.
  • Experience with high availability, clustering, Always On, replication, performance tuning, monitoring tools, SSIS/SSRS configuration, backup utilities, encryption, and data protection tools.
  • Broad cross-functional IT knowledge, including applications, information security, networking, cloud database solutions on AWS and/or Azure, open-source databases such as MySQL and PostgreSQL, and willingness to work rotational shifts and weekend on-call support.
