ADNOC Trading Limited (AT) is seeking another ambitious and motivated Senior Legal Counsel to join its Legal, Compliance & Contracts team of 11 in Abu Dhabi.

Incorporated in the Abu Dhabi Global Market, Abu Dhabi's international financial centre, AT commenced commercial operations in December 2020 and currently trades crude oil, LNG, sulphur and emissions. It plans to expand the range of products its trades over time as well as extend its geographical expansion by opening offices overseas (Singapore and Geneva are to commence trading operations by end of 2024, Houston will be following in the near future.

The Role:

The role will consist of supporting the General Counsel and the rest of the AT Legal team in advising on a variety of commodity trading, shipping and finance transactions with a particular emphasis on long-term LNG transactions. The candidate will ideally have extensive experience reviewing, drafting and/or advising on the following types of legal documents:-

  • Long-term and mid-term LNG sale and purchase agreements (5 years or longer)
  • Terminal use agreements
  • Regasification arrangements
  • Conditions of use/terminal handbooks
  • Lifting agreements/balancing agreements
  • Tender documentation

In addition, the candidate can be expected to advise AT on short term trading of LNG as well as in relation to AT's other commodities (as mentioned above).

The successful candidate will ideally also have expertise in reviewing, drafting and advising on shipping contracts (including charterparty reviews), spot and forwards physical and financial commodity trading contracts, general terms and conditions, and derivative & exchange contracts and rules.

Job Specific Accountabilities

  • Provides legal advice on operational, commercial, corporate and transactional matters relating to AT's supply, trading and financing activities.
  • Drafts, reviews, interprets and amends various forms of legal documentation related to the business of AT.
  • Assists in relation to any litigation or claims affecting AT.
  • Supports the development of junior Emirati lawyers and coordinates with other departments and functions on development and implementation of training and development initiatives.
  • Manages external legal counsel.
  • Coordinates with other key departments in ADNOC such as the ADNOC Corporate Governance Department and the ADNOC Compliance Department.
  • Coordinates with other legal departments within ADNOC.
  • Performs other similar duties as assigned by the AT General Counsel.

Qualification requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (law or otherwise) from a reputable university.
  • Legal professional qualification, preferably from a common law jurisdiction.

Minimum Experience & Knowledge & Skills

  • Minimum of 10 years energy trading experience in a reputable international law firm and/or in-house legal department.
  • Excellent English language (written and spoken). Fluent Arabic in addition is an advantage but not a pre-requisite.
