Job Description

Senior Materials Engineer|

GCL is seeking an experienced and highly competent Senior Materials Engineer to lead and manage all materials engineering activities across infrastructure, landscape, and construction projects.

The role ensures that all materials used in the project comply with contract specifications, Abu Dhabi authority standards, and international testing standards, while supporting project delivery, quality control, and cost efficiency.

The Senior Materials Engineer will act as the technical authority for all material-related approvals, testing, inspections, and coordination with consultants, suppliers, testing laboratories, and relevant authorities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage all materials engineering activities, including material submittals, approvals, testing, inspections, and documentation across infrastructure and landscape projects.
  • Review and approve contractor, subcontractor, and supplier material submittals in accordance with project specifications, contract requirements, and applicable standards such as ASTM, BS, AASHTO, ISO, and Abu Dhabi authority standards.
  • Ensure compliance with Abu Dhabi regulatory requirements, including standards issued by DMT, ADM, ADQCC, ADSSC, and other relevant authorities.
  • Ensure materials and related documentation comply with IDAS (Infrastructure Design and Approval System) and IMAS (Infrastructure Management and Approval System) requirements where applicable.
  • Act as the technical authority for all material-related matters across roads, utilities, landscape, and construction works.
  • Oversee and supervise laboratory and field testing activities for construction and landscape materials including:
  • Concrete, asphalt, soil, aggregates, and steel
  • Road and infrastructure materials
  • Landscape materials such as topsoil, irrigation materials, geotextiles, turf, pavers, and hardscape materials
  • Ensure that only approved materials are delivered, properly stored, and incorporated into the project in accordance with approved submittals and specifications.
  • Conduct site inspections and quality audits to verify compliance with specifications, approved materials, and quality standards.
  • Coordinate closely with consultants, testing laboratories, suppliers, subcontractors, and site teams on all material-related matters.
  • Identify and manage non-conforming materials, ensuring corrective and preventive actions are implemented.
  • Review and approve Certificates of Compliance, MSDS, technical data sheets, and laboratory test reports.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to Materials Engineers, QA/QC Engineers, and site teams.
  • Support procurement teams in the technical evaluation and prequalification of material suppliers and manufacturers.
  • Optimize material selection considering durability, sustainability, and cost efficiency while maintaining compliance with project specifications.
  • Maintain material approval logs, testing registers, and quality documentation.
  • Monitor material approval schedules and ensure timely approvals aligned with project construction progress.
  • Identify potential material-related risks and quality issues and propose technical solutions to the Technical Manager.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or Materials Engineering (Master's Degree is an advantage).
  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in materials engineering within contracting companies working on infrastructure and construction projects.
  • Strong experience in Abu Dhabi projects is highly preferred.
  • Experience in infrastructure, roads, utilities, landscape, and building projects.
  • Strong knowledge of Abu Dhabi authority standards and approval procedures, including ADM requirements.
  • Practical experience with IDAS and IMAS submission systems and infrastructure approval workflows.
  • Proven experience coordinating with consultants, authorities, testing laboratories, and suppliers in Abu Dhabi.
  • UAE / GCC project experience is required.

  • Strong expertise in construction, infrastructure, and landscape materials and testing procedures.
  • In-depth knowledge of international standards including ASTM, BS, AASHTO, and ISO.
  • Strong understanding of Abu Dhabi authority material approval requirements and specifications.
  • Experience in material submittal reviews, mix design approvals, and laboratory coordination.
  • Ability to analyze technical data and resolve complex material-related issues.
  • Knowledge of sustainable and environmentally compliant materials is an advantage.
