Position: Senior Officer, Library Automation Systems – LLT
Reports to: Director, Library Automation Systems
Purpose:
This role manages the exploration, evaluation, and implementation of emerging technologies that enhance library services, and contributes to the development of innovative digital services, AI-enabled solutions, web technologies, and user experiences through experimentation, prototyping, and collaboration. It also supports library technology operations, maintains selected digital platforms, and provides technical guidance and training to library staff.
Responsibilities:
Emerging Technologies, AI and Innovation:
- Explore, evaluate, and pilot emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, automation, immersive technologies, and interactive applications, to improve library services, workflows, and user engagement
- Develop proof-of-concepts and prototypes, document findings, while ensuring clear recommendations for successful technology implementation
Digital Services and Web Technologies:
- Maintain and enhance the library website, discovery interfaces, and other digital platforms, while ensuring continuous usability improvements, digital accessibility, and seamless integration of new services
Technology Development and Automation:
- Develop and maintain small-scale applications, scripts, workflows, dashboards, or integrations that improve library operations and user services
- Assist in testing and implementing new library technologies and system enhancements
Staff Enablement and Technology Adoption:
- Develop user guides, deliver technology demonstrations and workshops, while ensuring smooth technology adoption, increased digital literacy, and effective use of AI-enabled tools across library teams
Research, Assessment and Vendor Collaboration:
- Monitor technology trends, evaluate new products, collaborate with vendors during trials, and prepare recommendations based on usability, technical feasibility, and alignment with LLT strategic priorities
Technical Support:
- Provide technical support for library systems and digital services as required and assist with troubleshooting and testing during system implementations
Additional Related Support:
- Perform other administrative duties as required
Requirements:
Minimum Education Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, software engineering, artificial intelligence, or a related field
- Five years of relevant experience in software development, web technologies, AI applications, automation, digital services, or related areas
Skills:
- Technical: Strong Programming or scripting skills, preferably Python, JavaScript, HTML or CSS, SQL
- Knowledge of REST APIs, Git or GitHub, and workflow automation tools
- Interest in generative AI tools, prompt engineering, and AI-assisted productivity
- Knowledge of data visualization and dashboard tools is desirable
- Understanding of accessibility and UX principles
- Library Systems: Knowledge of library technologies, e.g., OCLC WMS, discovery services, digital repositories, and authentication platforms, is desirable and can be acquired on the job
- Interpersonal: Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work in a team environment
- Self-motivated, reliable, and able to work within time constraints
