Job Description

Senior Operations & Cargo Performance Supervisor

Location: Dubai, UAE

A leading and growing dry bulk shipping company is seeking an experienced Senior Operations & Cargo Performance Supervisor to join its commercial operations team in Dubai.

This is an excellent opportunity for a former Chief Officer or senior seagoing professional looking to transition into, or further develop, a shore-based operational role within a dynamic commercial environment.

Working closely with the Commercial and Operations teams, you will provide technical oversight across cargo operations, vessel performance and operational risk, ensuring voyages are executed efficiently while minimizing commercial exposure.

Key Responsibilities:

Cargo Documentation & Bills of Lading

  • Review Bills of Lading (B/Ls) and supporting cargo documentation.
  • Validate B/L terms, clauses and identify discrepancies.
  • Assess implications relating to LOIs, cargo claims and documentary risk.
  • Coordinate with Masters, agents and charterers on cargo documentation matters.
  • Ensure operational documentation aligns with Charter Party terms and identify potential claim exposures.

Cargo Operations & Stowage

  • Review and assess cargo stowage plans.
  • Evaluate cargo compatibility, loading/discharging sequences and operational limitations.
  • Provide technical guidance to Masters and Operations teams on cargo-related matters.
  • Identify and mitigate risks associated with cargo handling and stowage.

Vessel Performance Monitoring

  • Monitor vessel performance, including speed, fuel consumption and weather impact.
  • Analyse performance deviations and prepare reports.
  • Support the management of performance-related claims.
  • Liaise with Technical and Commercial teams on vessel performance matters.

Operational Support

  • Provide senior operational guidance to vessel operators.
  • Act as an escalation point for complex cargo and operational issues.
  • Interface directly with Masters to resolve operational challenges.
  • Support proactive claim prevention through operational reviews against Charter Party requirements.
  • Ensure alignment between voyage execution and commercial objectives.

Candidate Profile

  • Previous seagoing experience as Chief Officer, Master Mariner or equivalent senior deck officer within the dry bulk sector.
  • Strong shore-based experience in day-to-day dry bulk vessel operations, including voyage execution and voyage instructions.
  • Experience within a ship-owning or ship operating company is highly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of cargo operations, Bills of Lading and Charter Party implications.
  • Sound knowledge of vessel performance monitoring and voyage optimisation.
  • Ability to work effectively across Commercial, Operations and Technical teams.
  • Strong analytical, decision-making and problem-solving abilities.

Key Competencies

  • Practical operational judgement.
  • Excellent attention to detail, particularly regarding documentation.
  • Strong commercial awareness and risk management mindset.
  • Ability to work independently and confidently make operational decisions.
  • Clear communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and shipping software systems.

Additional Information

This is not an Operations Manager position. Instead, the role is suited to a highly experienced dry bulk operations professional who can act as a senior operational coordinator and technical advisor, providing oversight and support across complex operational matters.

The successful candidate should be comfortable working autonomously, supporting both shore-based teams and vessel Masters, while serving as a key link between Commercial, Operations and Technical departments.

Candidates with experience gained in ship-owning or ship operating environments will be particularly well suited, as the role requires a deep understanding of the full voyage lifecycle rather than purely chartering exposure.

Given the company's significant operations team in India, candidates who are based in India or have experience working closely with Indian operational teams are encouraged to apply. The successful individual will liaise with colleagues in India on a daily basis.

The recruitment process is currently underway, with the successful candidate expected to join between August and September.

If you're an experienced dry bulk professional looking to leverage your seagoing expertise in a commercially focused shore-based role, we'd be delighted to hear from you.
