About the Role
Paeonia Innovations builds OrionIR™, a palm-sized inline mid-infrared spectrometer for Process Analytical Technology (PAT) applications, and distributes deep-tech hardware platforms across Asia. We're looking for a versatile, senior-level engineer who can move fluidly across the full stack - from firmware and hardware bring-up, to backend databases and industrial protocol integration, to the software and UI layers our customers actually touch.
This is a generalist role for someone who thinks in systems. You'll be expected to provide architecture designs end-to-end, keep our infrastructure secure, and use AI tools aggressively to move fast - without ever putting our proprietary algorithms or customer data at risk.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Software Development
- Design, build, and maintain desktop and web applications in C#, Python, and C for instrument control, data acquisition, and analytics.
- Develop and optimize SQL databases underpinning product data, calibration models, and customer-facing reporting.
- Maintain and evolve the company website and any customer-facing HTML/web properties, ensuring uptime, performance, and content accuracy.
Firmware & Hardware
- Write and debug embedded firmware (C) for spectrometer and sensor subsystems, including bring-up on new hardware revisions.
- Work directly with hardware engineers on schematics, signal integrity, and board-level troubleshooting where firmware and hardware intersect.
Industrial Communication & Integration
- Implement and support industrial communication protocols - OPC UA, industrial Ethernet, and MODBUS - for integration into customer PAT and process-control environments.
- Ensure reliable, low-latency data exchange between instruments, plant systems, and our own software stack.
Security Administration & Data Protection
- Own security administration across our software: access control, network security, credential management, and patching.
- Define and enforce policies that protect confidential algorithms, calibration models, and customer data - including strict boundaries on what can and cannot be shared with third-party or cloud AI tools.
AI-Enabled Development
- Make full, deliberate use of AI coding and productivity tools to accelerate development cycles and shorten time-to-deployment.
- Establish safe patterns for AI adoption (e.g., local/enterprise-grade tooling, redaction of sensitive code and data, review gates) so speed never comes at the cost of IP or data security.
UI/UX & Systems Architecture
- Design, prototype, and test user interfaces for both embedded device UIs and companion desktop/web software, iterating quickly with real user feedback.
- Own systems architecture end-to-end - hardware, firmware, network, and software layers - making build-vs-buy calls and documenting design decisions for the team.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- 8+ years of professional software/firmware engineering experience, ideally spanning embedded systems and full-stack development.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Proficient and experienced with Windows development in C# on .Net, WPF and WinUI.
- Proficiency in SQL, HTML, Python, and C.
- Hands-on experience with OPC UA, MODBUS, and industrial Ethernet networking in a real deployment context.
- Experience in scientific instrumentation, spectroscopy, or optical/photonics hardware.
- Practical security administration experience: access control, network hardening, encryption, and data governance.
- Demonstrated use of AI-assisted development tools in a professional setting, with clear judgment about what data/code is safe to expose to them.
- Systems-level thinking: able to reason about trade-offs across hardware, firmware, and software rather than working in a single layer.
- Self-directed and comfortable in a small-team, high-ownership startup environment.
