Core Responsibilities
- Precision Defect Removal: Use pneumatic or electrical grinders to remove weld defects (porosity, slag, cracks) identified and marked by NDT (Ultrasonic/Radiographic) teams.
- Cavity Preparation: Create smooth, boat-shaped grooves for repair welding to ensure the SMAW Repair Welder has proper access for 100% penetration and fusion.
- Wall Thickness Monitoring: Ensure grinding does not exceed the Minimum Wall Thickness specified by API 5L or the project-specific ITP (Inspection & Test Plan).
- Intermediate Cleaning: Perform inter-pass cleaning/grinding during multi-pass repair welding to remove slag and prevent inclusions.
Technical Skill Set
- Equipment Mastery: Expert operation of heavy-duty angle grinders, die grinders, and pneumatic chipping tools. Familiarity with Air Carbon Arc Gouging (ACAG) is a significant advantage.
- NDT Marking Literacy: Ability to interpret NDT markings (depth and location) on the pipe surface to ensure the correct defect is removed.
- Measurement Tools: Proficient use of ultrasonic thickness (UT) gauges and bridge-cam gauges to verify remaining wall thickness and weld profiles.
- Abrasive Knowledge: Selection of the correct grinding wheels/discs for high-strength API steels (X65 to X80)
Key Qualifications
- Education: High school or ITI (Fitter/Mechanical) trade certificate.
- Experience: 3-7 years of experience in an LSAW, HSAW, or heavy fabrication mill. Experience in Repair Stations is mandatory.
- Industry Background: Candidates from similar industries are highly valued for their familiarity with Third-Party Inspection (TPI) standards.
Preferred Attributes
- Awareness of standards regarding the maximum allowable depth of grinding and the mandatory use of NDT after defect removal.
- Strict adherence to PPE (full face shields, respiratory masks, and ear protection) and vibration safety protocols.
- Understanding that over-grinding can lead to the rejection of an entire pipe.
