Job Description

Core Responsibilities

  • Continuous Seam Closing: Operate the automated continuous tack welding machine to close the longitudinal seam of O-shaped pipes.
  • Alignment Control: Monitor and adjust the gap and offset (Hi-Lo) of the seam in real-time to ensure it meets specified tolerances.
  • Welding Parameter Management: Set and maintain GMAW parameters (Wire Feed Speed, Voltage, Gas Flow, and Travel Speed) as per the approved Welding Procedure Specification (WPS).
  • Seam Tracking: Utilize laser-tracking or mechanical guidance systems to ensure the tack weld is perfectly centered on the seam.
  • Defect Prevention: Ensure the tack weld is sound, continuous, and free of cracks, as it must withstand the mechanical stresses of the internal SAW pass.
  • Consumable Management: Manage the supply of shielding gas

Technical Skill Set

  • Equipment Mastery: Proficiency in operating automated tack-welding units from manufacturers like SMS Group, Haeusler, or Lincoln Electric.
  • GMAW/MAG Expertise: Deep understanding of the Gas Metal Arc Welding process, specifically for heavy-wall thickness (up to 40mm+).
  • Laser & Sensor Integration: Experience with automated seam-tracking sensors and HMI-based control systems.
  • Measurement Tools: Use of V-Weld gauges and callipers to check weld reinforcement and edge alignment.

Key Qualifications

  • Education: ITI (Welder) or a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience: 3-8 years of experience in automated welding, specifically in an LSAW, HSAW, or heavy fabrication environment.
  • Certification: Valid Welder Performance Qualification (WPQ) as per ASME Section IX or API 5L is highly preferred.
  • Industry Background: Candidates from similar industries are valued for their knowledge of Zero-Defect export production.

Preferred Attributes (Aramco & Global Standards)

  • Understanding that the tack weld will be re-melted by the SAW process and must not leave any residual slag or contamination.
  • Knowledge of flash protection, fume extraction systems, and high-voltage electrical safety.

Employer-Specific Context

  • Strict focus on minimizing Hi-Lo (Edge Misalignment) at the tacking stage to ensure 100% UT (Ultrasonic Testing) clearance later.
  • Integration with Industry 4.0 platforms where tack welding parameters for every pipe are logged to the SAP
  • Focus on high-speed Throughput (meters per minute) while maintaining the structural integrity needed to hold the pipe together during transport to SAW stations.
