Job Description

Department: NUQ Student Affairs

Salary/Grade: EXS/10

The Counselor/Coordinator Health and Wellness for Northwestern Qatar (NU-Q) is a licensed mental health professional providing evaluation, crisis intervention, case management, brief psychotherapy, and consultation to the community.The Counselor/Coordinator provides educational health and wellness programming and makes referrals to off-campus health and wellness providers as necessary. The counselor facilitates and manages the campus disability services program, and liaise with Northwestern University AccessibleNU as necessary, collects and evaluates student immunization records, and provides professional consultation(s) during student medical leave of absence requests/reinstatement.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Clinical Services

  • Provide culturally grounded psychotherapy to individuals and groups, engages in counseling-related activities, including, but not limited to:
  • Maintaining counseling records, case management, and initial assessment.
  • Providing crisis intervention, if necessary.
  • Administering and interpreting psychological tests/inventories.
  • Making referrals; and managing various organizational and administrative aspects of counseling case.
  • Consults with parents, faculty, staff members (NU-Q and Education City), academic deans, off-campus physicians/therapist, when appropriate and with necessary authorizations to provide quality care to students.
  • Assumes after-hours on-call responsibilities.
  • Makes referrals to off-campus clinical services when appropriate.

Community Outreach and Education Programming

  • Design, manage, conduct and evaluate promotion and educational programs to promote mental and physical health awareness and overall student well-being.
  • Represent NU-Q Counseling and Wellness on- and off-campus, as necessary.
  • Collaborate with Education City institutions on wellness-related initiatives.

Accessibility and Accommodation Services

  • In collaboration with Northwestern University AccessibleNU office, serves as a focal point for NUQ students applying to accommodation support and services.
  • Liaise with administration, faculty, and staff to ensure accessibility industry best-practices, State of Qatar and federal regulations are met.

Other Duties

  • Collect, and manage required student immunization records.
  • Manage, assess, and develop Counseling and Wellness services and systems in alignment with Northwestern University- Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)

Minimum Qualifications (education, Experience, Certifications, Skills)

  • Master's degree in psychology, counseling, social work, or a related field.
  • Five to eight years post-master's experience in a university counseling center or similar environment.
  • Licensed for independent practice in psychology, counseling, social work or related field in the United States, State of Qatar, and/or related licensing body.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to work as part of a highly cohesive and interdisciplinary team.
  • Experience in the provision of crisis intervention and consultation.
  • Demonstrated understanding of ethical and legal issues in mental health practice.
  • Applied experience in the area of health education, disability services and mental health counseling.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with and ensuring the welfare of students from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Creative approach to the assessment and development of programs addressing the needs of students.

Preferred Qualifications (Education, Experience, Certifications, Skills)

  • Six to ten years of post-education experience
  • Doctoral level degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in clinical or counseling psychology from a U.S., State of Qatar, and/or equivalent accredited institution.
  • Experience working with students from the GCC, MENA, and/or Global South.
  • Experience and/or certification in clinical therapy for anxiety and depression diagnosis.
  • Arabic language proficiency
  • Ability to work with a highly diverse population.
  • Thorough knowledge of clinical applications for contemporary issues in psychology and student affairs, especially as related to individual and cultural diversity.

The target budgeted salary for this position is $87,899 to $116,000 annually. Offers will be based on candidate experience and education, as well as equity within Northwestern University.
