Job Description

PETRONAS Canada has a unique opportunity to offer an international assignment to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE) for a 3-year term. PETRONAS Abu Dhabi is in the early stages of appraisal of a 500,000 acre onshore unconventional parcel of land with substantial potential oil resource. This asset has the prospect to be a significant part of PETRONAS global unconventional assets portfolio and offers you the chance to be part of a meaningful early-stage growth project.

The initial multi-year appraisal period will focus on defining reservoir quality and variability type curve baseline and repeatability and estimated ultimate recovery. The first drilling campaign is planned for early 2024.

The project is a joint venture between PETRONAS Abu Dhabi, a wholly owned subsidiary of PETRONAS, and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC). PETRONAS will hold 100 per cent equity and operatorship to explore and appraise unconventional oil in the concession area for a period of up to six years. Following a successful appraisal phase, the partners can enter a production and development concession, in which ADNOC has the option to participate with up to 50 per cent stake.

The Role

We have an incredible expatriate opportunity for a skilled and ambitious individual to join our team in the vibrant city of Abu Dhabi, UAE as the Drilling, Completions and Construction Lead. Reporting directly to the Head of Unconventional Technical & Operations, you will play a pivotal role in overseeing the planning and execution of drilling, completions, and field construction.

How You Will Contribute

  • Lead the engineering and execution of drilling, completions and field construction projects. Ensure safe and cost-effective design, delivery and transition to production facilities
  • Provide technical and strategic business support for Supply Chain to meet project needs and timelines
  • Develop and manage operational plans and strategies. Set performance and success measures, evaluate drilling locations/sites, and ensure optimal plans for field area set up
  • Identify, manage, and communicate opportunities and risks with a focus on delivering fit for purpose wells to meet project objectives and enhance processes and cost effectiveness
  • Leverage existing unconventional best practices, systems and processes. Utilize proven approaches to drive project deliverables, timelines and capital expenditures, strategies to address complex issues while ensuring compliance with applicable engineering standards, regulatory requirements, and applicable corporate health, safety & environmental practices
  • Provide leadership to field personnel and crews, prioritizing safety and quality during execution of operations; identify and resolve any non-compliance issues
  • Identify innovative and cost-effective designs and strategies to accommodate greenfield data limitations and immature fracturing industry while ensuring continued alignment with organizational strategies and priorities
  • Conduct detailed technical evaluations and provide development strategy recommendations to senior leadership on growth initiatives
  • Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including other PETRONAS entities and partners. Provide mentorship and coaching while sharing technical expertise to accelerate the advancement of the local Unconventional industry
  • Lead by example in promoting a culture of safety, innovation, integrity, and collaboration across multi-disciplinary functional groups. Encourage alignment, information sharing, and analysis to achieve optimal integrated solutions for the business

What You Bring

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering with a professional APEGA designation
  • 15+ years of related experience in the oil and gas industry
  • Extensive experience in large-scale unconventional fracturing activities
  • International work experience would be an asset
  • Experience leading a team of direct reports in project management/execution
  • Demonstrated strong leadership, organizational, and time management skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal and collaboration skills with the ability to effectively work with cross functional teams and engage others to support projects and initiatives
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to tailor messages appropriately to address the target audience
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Strong project-management skills, with demonstrated competency to multi-task and be agile when priorities change
