Underwriter, Marine Cargo (Singapore)

Purpose of the Role

To underwrite and manage marine cargo risks profitably while maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements, company underwriting guidelines, and portfolio objectives. The role involves evaluating cargo exposures, pricing risks, managing broker relationships, and developing new business opportunities.


Key Responsibilities

Underwriting

  • Assess and underwrite new and renewal marine cargo risks.
  • Analyse risk exposures, loss histories, coverage requirements, and market conditions.
  • Determine pricing, terms, conditions, and coverage structures.
  • Ensure underwriting decisions align with delegated authority and company risk appetite.
  • Manage portfolio profitability and monitor loss ratios.

Business Development

  • Build and maintain relationships with brokers, clients, cedants, and business partners.
  • Identify and develop new sources of marine cargo business.
  • Support growth initiatives for cargo and project cargo insurance products.
  • Participate in broker meetings, client visits, and industry events.

Portfolio Management & Reporting

  • Monitor premium growth, claims experience, and underwriting performance.
  • Produce underwriting and portfolio reports.
  • Review market developments and emerging risks affecting marine trade and transportation.
  • Support regional and global business planning activities.

Compliance & Administration

  • Ensure compliance with MAS regulations and internal underwriting policies.
  • Review policy documentation, endorsements, and contract certainty requirements.
  • Maintain accurate underwriting records and systems.
  • Assist with premium collection and credit control processes.

Skills & Qualifications

Required

  • 5+ years of marine cargo underwriting experience.
  • Strong knowledge of marine cargo risks, policy wordings, clauses, and insurance principles.
  • Excellent analytical and risk assessment skills.
  • Strong negotiation and broker relationship management skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication abilities.

Preferred

  • ACII/FCII or equivalent insurance qualifications.
  • Regional underwriting experience in Asia.
  • Degree in Insurance, Business, Maritime Studies, Finance, Logistics, or related discipline.
