Vessel Operator - Dry Bulk

Location: Dubai, UAE:

An established international shipping and commodities business is looking to appoint an experienced Vessel Operator to join its growing operations team. This is an excellent opportunity for a commercially minded shipping professional who enjoys taking ownership of voyages from fixture through to completion while working in a fast-paced, global trading environment.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the end-to-end operational execution of assigned voyages, ensuring safe, efficient and cost-effective performance while maintaining strong relationships with customers, vessel owners, agents and internal commercial teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the full operational execution of dry bulk vessel voyages from post-fixture through to completion.
  • Plan and coordinate loading and discharge operations, cargo intake, stowage plans, itineraries and voyage schedules.
  • Issue voyage instructions to masters, owners and agents in line with charter party terms and operational best practices.
  • Coordinate closely with chartering, trading and commercial teams to ensure seamless voyage execution.
  • Appoint and manage port agents, monitoring vessel turnaround and cargo operations to minimise delays.
  • Calculate bunker requirements and coordinate bunker stem planning with procurement and vessel command.
  • Maintain proactive communication with customers, providing timely operational updates and voyage notifications.
  • Ensure accurate preparation and handling of all shipping documentation, including Bills of Lading, Mate's Receipts, Cargo Manifests and related documents.
  • Prepare freight, laytime, demurrage, detention and dead-freight calculations, ensuring accurate voyage accounting and cost reporting.
  • Monitor voyage profitability by recording port costs, bunker consumption and voyage expenses.
  • Coordinate insurance matters, P&I requirements, war risk cover and claims handling where required.
  • Identify operational risks and proactively resolve issues to ensure efficient voyage performance and customer satisfaction.

About You:

  • Experience (4-10+ years) in vessel operations within dry bulk, breakbulk or commodity shipping.
  • Strong understanding of charter parties, laytime calculations and voyage execution.
  • Knowledge of shipping documentation, cargo operations and port agency management.
  • Commercially aware with excellent planning and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple voyages simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication skills with confidence dealing with customers, owners, agents and internal stakeholders in multi-cultural / international team environment.
  • High attention to detail with a proactive and solutions-oriented approach.
  • Experience using voyage management or shipping operations systems is advantageous.
