Job Description

The Role

Department: IFPD (Insurance, Financial and Professional Disputes)

Location: Abu Dhabi

Role: Associate

The Role

The firm's market leading insurance litigation practice is growing, and we are looking to hire an associate to assist the partners with insurance, financial and professional disputes. The role is based in Abu Dhabi, but the candidate will be part of our regional Insurance, Professional, and Financial Disputes (IFPD) Department and will be involved in matters across the GCC and broader Middle East.

Clyde & Co's Global and Middle East IFPD Departments are market leading and provide the full range of dispute resolution services to insurers, financial services firms, professionals, and directors and officers.

The successful candidate will be joining a team in our IFPD Department that is based in Abu Dhabi. You will mainly work with partner Alfred Thornton, who focuses on all forms of dispute resolution. The Abu Dhabi IFPD team is currently advising on and/or representing parties in multiple arbitrations (both ad hoc and institutional), mediations, regional common law court disputes, and onshore court proceedings. The matters the team is currently handling primarily involve construction, engineering and energy insurance coverage related disputes; defending construction professionals against professional negligence claims; reinsurance related disputes; and recoveries on behalf of insurers.

Most of the partners and senior lawyers in our regional IFPD Department are internal promotions. We are looking for a candidate that is similarly eager to develop their career as a dispute resolution lawyer and complement a close-knit team of colleagues that all have a long-term commitment to the development of the team and more broadly to Clyde & Co in Abu Dhabi.

Key Responsibilities

The main responsibilities of the role are:

  • to manage a case load of litigation and arbitration matters; including subrogated recoveries and the defence of insured professionals;
  • to provide advice to clients on dispute resolution strategy and to work with colleagues in other offices to manage cross-border litigation (both across the GCC and further afield);
  • to research, draft and prepare advice and pleadings to efficiently progress matters;
  • to work as part of a regional disputes team and to support partners and legal directors with general commercial litigation where necessary; and
  • to participate in our IFPD department's business development and marketing initiatives, including contributing to client training and drafting of articles on legal developments of relevance to our clients.

Candidate Requirements

We are interested in candidates with the following:

  • 3 - 5 years PQE;
  • Common law qualified;
  • Training and disputes experience gained at a well-regarded law firm, with at least two years of experience in the Middle East;
  • Experience in drafting pleadings, submissions and applications in arbitrations and/or Court proceedings;
  • Bilingual in English and Arabic (must be able to write);
  • A genuine interest in developing a long-term career as an experienced litigator with the leading insurance disputes practice in the Middle East;
  • A willingness to learn different systems of law, both civil and common law, and to take a pro-active approach in understanding the commercial issues faced by clients in the sector we service; and
  • An ability to both work in a large team that will comprise lawyers that will be both more junior and senior, and autonomously.

The Firm

When you work at Clyde & Co, you join a team of 500 partners, 2,400 lawyers, 3,200 legal professionals and 5,500 people in nearly 70 offices and associated offices worldwide. Our values are the principles that guide the decisions we make, unite us in our endeavours and strengthen our delivery, for both our clients and our firm.
