Job Summary:

The Captain / Barge Master is responsible for the safe operation and management of vessels and barges within port and harbor environments. The role focuses on efficient cargo handling, vessel maneuvering, and crew supervision, ensuring compliance with maritime regulations and port operational standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Vessel Navigation & Operations in Port AreasSafely maneuver and operate barges within port, dock, and harbor areas.
  • Coordinate berthing, unberthing, and tug operations as required.
  • Monitor vessel systems to ensure operational readiness during port operations.
  • Cargo Handling & ManagementOversee loading, unloading, and securing of cargo at port facilities.
  • Ensure proper weight distribution and stability of vessels during operations.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for all cargo movements and transfers.
  • Safety & Regulatory ComplianceImplement and enforce port safety procedures for crew, cargo, and vessels.
  • Conduct drills for emergency situations (fire, flooding, spills) at the port.
  • Ensure compliance with port authority regulations and international maritime laws.
  • Crew Supervision & CoordinationLead and manage deckhands, dock personnel, and onboard crew.
  • Assign daily duties and monitor performance during port operations.
  • Collaborate with port authorities, pilots, and tug operators to ensure smooth operations.
  • Maintenance & ReportingOversee routine inspections and maintenance of vessels and barge equipment.
  • Maintain logs of cargo operations, vessel movements, and safety incidents.
  • Report operational issues to the Port Operations Manager promptly.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Valid Master / Captain License applicable to vessel type and tonnage.
  • Proven experience in ports, harbors, or terminal operations.
  • Strong knowledge of vessel maneuvering, cargo handling, and stability in confined waters.
  • Proficient in navigation and communication systems used in ports.
  • Leadership, communication, and team coordination skills.
  • Knowledge of maritime and port authority safety regulations.
