Cost Accountant
Job Summary
A Cost Accountant is responsible for analyzing, monitoring, and controlling costs within an organization. The role focuses on cost allocation, budgeting, inventory valuation, variance analysis, and supporting management with financial insights to improve profitability and operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
1. Cost Analysis & Control
- Prepare and maintain cost accounting systems and procedures
- Analyze production costs (materials, labor, overhead)
- Perform variance analysis (actual vs. budget/standard)
- Monitor and control inventory costs
- Review cost structures and recommend improvements
2. Budgeting & Forecasting
- Assist in preparation of annual budgets and forecasts
- Track and analyze budget performance
- Support cost planning and financial projections
3. Inventory & Manufacturing Accounting
- Calculate standard costs and update them as required
- Perform inventory valuation and reconciliation
- Conduct periodic stock counts and cost audits
- Ensure accurate recording of work-in-progress (WIP) and finished goods
4. Financial Reporting
- Prepare cost reports for management
- Support month-end and year-end closing processes
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards and company policies
- Assist with internal and external audits
5. Process Improvement
- Identify cost-saving opportunities
- Improve internal controls related to cost management
- Support ERP system implementation and optimization
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- Professional certification (preferred):
- CMA (Certified Management Accountant)
- ACCA
- CPA
Experience
- 25 years of experience in cost accounting or manufacturing accounting
- Experience in ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics) preferred
