The Role

The Cloud Engineer will design, build, and operate our cloud and platform infrastructure using modern DevOps and GitOps practices. You'll work closely with software engineers, platform, and security teams to ensure our systems are reliable, secure, and scalable. This role has strong hands-on ownership, production exposure, and real impact on how Digital Zone runs in production.

Location

This role is fully remote. We accept candidates from Egypt, Jordan, or UAE.

Our HQ is in Baghdad, Iraq, and we have another office in Dubai, UAE. Team members are welcome to work from the office if they prefer.

Responsibilities

  • Build and manage cloud infrastructure: provision, manage, and evolve AWS infrastructure using Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform), ensuring scalability, security, and cost efficiency.
  • Kubernetes & platform operations: deploy, manage, and optimize workloads on Kubernetes clusters using Helm and Kustomize.
  • CI/CD & automation: design, implement, and maintain CI/CD pipelines with a strong focus on GitHub Actions for build, test, and delivery automation.
  • GitOps workflows: contribute to GitOps practices using ArgoCD for application and infrastructure lifecycle management.
  • Reliability & observability: operate and improve monitoring, logging, and alerting systems to ensure high availability and fast incident response.
  • Production support: participate in a weekly on-call rotation to support Digital Zone's production workloads.
  • Data & analytics platforms: support and optimize deployments of data and analytics systems such as Airflow, Airbyte, Metabase, and similar platforms.
  • Environment enablement: support and optimize development and QA helper applications and environments.
  • Cross-team collaboration: work closely with developers, platform, and security teams to deliver reliable and secure services.
  • Continuous improvement: drive automation, standardization, and best practices across infrastructure, deployment, and operational workflows.

Qualifications

  • 35 years of professional experience in Cloud Engineering, DevOps, or SRE roles.
  • Strong hands-on experience with AWS core services (EC2, ECS, VPC, IAM, RDS, S3, etc.).
  • Proven proficiency with Terraform for Infrastructure-as-Code.
  • Solid experience operating Kubernetes in production (deployments, scaling, RBAC, networking).
  • Strong background in CI/CD pipeline design, preferably using GitHub Actions.
  • Familiarity with GitOps principles; experience with ArgoCD is a strong plus.
  • Good understanding of networking fundamentals, cloud security best practices, and automation.
  • Experience with logging, monitoring, and alerting stacks (e.g., ELK, EFK, LGTM) across multiple environments.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages such as Bash or Python.
  • Strong Git and version-control workflow knowledge.
  • Experience working with SQL-based databases; familiarity with PostgreSQL operations and tuning is a plus.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex systems and communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience operating highly scalable systems in production.
  • Prior experience working fully remotely with a strong sense of ownership and accountability.

Preferred Qualifications / Nice To Have

  • Experience applying the AWS Well-Architected Framework in real production environments.
  • Experience deploying and managing Keycloak or similar identity and access management solutions at scale.
  • Cloud certifications (AWS Associate/Professional, Azure Administrator, etc.).
  • Experience in fast-growing startups or small teams with high ownership and cross-functional collaboration.
