Job Description

The Director of Digital Onsite plays a central role in transforming the Museum's physical environment through the integration of immersive, interactive, and narrative-rich digital experiences. This role emphasizes moment-based, spatially integrated experiences that enhance engagement during physical visits to the Museum, offering visitors agency and interaction within exhibitions and displays. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with curators, educators, and designers to plan, prototype, and implement innovative digital installations that are impactful, inclusive, and educational. The Director will ensure that onsite digital experiences resonate with diverse audiences and support the Museum's mission of accessibility, storytelling, and civic engagement.

Roles and Responsibilities

Strategy and Planning:

  • Collaborate in strategic planning for the museum's digital development and innovation.
  • Research and apply emerging trends in digital curation to improve reach and relevance.

Budget Management:

  • Manage and allocate budget for digital onsite projects, ensuring cost- effectiveness and alignment with strategic priorities.

Policies, Processes, and Procedures:

  • Develop and maintain documentation for digital curation methodologies and best practices.
  • Implement standards for metadata and digital preservation in line with museum guidelines.
  • Ensure that the onsite digital projects are in compliance with user regulations.

Functional Accountabilities:

  • Oversee the curation and management of digital collections, ensuring the integration of innovative technologies to enhance visitor engagement.
  • Collaborate closely with museum curators, educators, and external stakeholders to strategically plan and execute digital onsite projects within the Museum's galleries.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of digital content quality and user experience, utilizing analytics to inform improvements.
  • Ensure the development and implementation of training initiatives for museum staff regarding digital tools and resources to support ongoing digital curation and preservation efforts.
  • Lead the creation and maintenance of comprehensive documentation on digital curation practices, methodologies, and project outcomes for future reference and compliance.
  • Research and apply emerging trends in digital curation to continuously enhance the museum's aptitude in reaching broader audiences.
  • Primary point of contact for digital inquiries and collaborating with IT specialists to resolve technical issues related to digital collections.
  • Ensure the facilitation of workshops and seminars aimed at educating the public and other stakeholders on the significance of digital preservation and curation.

Stakeholder Management:

  • Collaborate with curators, educators, artists, historians, and IT professionals on digital projects.
  • Serve as liaison for digital initiatives with the public, artists, and technical partners.

People Management:

  • Live by MoWC values, ethical standards, and governance.
  • Manage and support team members in performing their tasks in line with established policies and procedures.
  • Guide, mentor, and develop the Digital Onsite team to ensure continuous growth and achievement of functional objectives.
  • Set clear performance goals, provide regular feedback, and support professional development through coaching and formal evaluations.
  • Delegate authority appropriately to empower team members and encourage accountability.
  • Contribute to workforce planning, recruitment, and performance management while promoting employee engagement and motivation.
  • Foster a high-performance, inclusive, and collaborative work culture aligned with the museum's values.
  • Promote innovation and contribute to a positive, inspiring, and diverse workplace.

Job Qualifications and Requirements

Job Requirements

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Minimum 8 years of professional experience in digital curation, digital archiving, or related fields.
  • Proven project management experience in digital arts or cultural preservation.
  • Familiarity with digital tools such as CMS, DAM, and multimedia software.
  • Experience in developing digital onsite content, notably immersive experiences, VR, AR, and/or mapping projects.
  • Understanding of metadata standards, UX design, and digital engagement metrics.

Education and Certifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in museum studies, Digital Humanities, Art History, or related field (master's degree strongly preferred).
  • Certifications in digital preservation, project management, or UX design (optional).

Personal capabilities and qualifications:

  • Advance proficiency in digital content management systems(CMS) and digital asset management (DAM) tools.
  • Expertise in multimedia software, including Adobe Creative Suite and other digital editing tools.
  • Strong understanding of SEO best practices for digital content visibility and audience engagement.
  • Excellent project management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current trends in digital curation, including user experience (UX) design principles.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate and negotiate with various stakeholders.
  • Analytical thinking skills to interpret digital analytics and user behavior data to inform strategic decisions.
  • A strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion within the museum context, actively promoting these principles in digital initiatives.
