Job Description

Position Description

Ma'aden Barrick Copper Company (MBCC) is seeking experienced Fatal Risk Management Superintendents Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to support the implementation and assurance of critical risk controls at the Jabal Sayid Mine.

This role plays a key part in ensuring that critical controls designed to prevent fatalities and Material Unwanted Events (MUEs) are effectively implemented, verified, and continuously improved across operational areas.

The position requires strong operational experience and the ability to bridge fatal risk management standards with day-to-day field execution. The successful candidate must be capable of identifying control weaknesses, escalating material risks, and working directly with operational teams to strengthen control effectiveness.

This is a hands-on role that requires leadership, technical credibility, and the ability to influence operational teams to ensure fatal risks are actively managed.

Subject Matter Expertise

Candidates must possess strong operational expertise in at least one of the following risk domains:

  • Mining Operations
  • Processing / Plant Operations
  • Engineering & Asset Integrity
  • Mine Planning / MRM / TSM
  • Occupational Health & Safety (OHS)

The role requires deep understanding of operational hazards and the ability to ensure that critical controls are functioning effectively within the candidate's area of specialization.

Key Responsibilities:

Fatal Risk Identification & Management

Maintain oversight of the company's fatal risk categories and ensure that risk management frameworks remain aligned with operational reality.

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining and reviewing bowtie risk analyses.
  • Identifying emerging operational risks.
  • Ensuring critical controls address actual field conditions.
  • Challenging assumptions where controls may not reflect how work is performed.
  • Critical Control Implementation

Ensure critical controls are effectively implemented within operational areas.

This includes:

  • Translating risk controls into practical operational procedures.
  • Establishing clear accountability for control owners.
  • Supporting operational teams in implementing required controls.
  • Identifying and resolving barriers preventing control execution.

Critical Control Verification (CCV)

Design and execute Critical Control Verification (CCV) programs to validate control effectiveness.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting regular CCV inspections and verifications.
  • Using structured verification tools and checklists.
  • Ensuring operational teams understand control intent and performance expectations.
  • Detecting early signs of control degradation.

Assurance & Control Effectiveness

Support the assurance framework that confirms controls are achieving the intended risk reduction.

This includes:

  • Operational self-verification activities.
  • Management control reviews.
  • Independent assurance assessments.

The objective is to confirm that controls actively prevent fatal events, not just manage their consequences.

Control Owner Capability Development

Strengthen the capability of operational personnel responsible for managing critical controls.

This includes:

Defining competency expectations for control owners.

Coaching operational supervisors and teams.

Supporting succession planning for key operational roles.

Ensuring control owners have the authority and resources needed to execute controls.

Reporting & Risk Governance

Provide clear reporting on the performance of fatal risk management programs.

Responsibilities include:

  • Preparing monthly and quarterly risk performance dashboards.
  • Tracking CCV completion rates.
  • Monitoring control deficiencies and corrective action closure.
  • Escalating critical risks requiring immediate attention.

Continuous Improvement

Drive continuous improvement in fatal risk management practices.

This includes:

  • Benchmarking industry practices.
  • Evaluating technologies that strengthen risk controls.
  • Improving verification methodologies.
  • Sharing lessons learned to strengthen operational risk management.

Qualifications

  • Technical qualification in mining, engineering, safety, or a related operational discipline.
  • Engineering degree or equivalent operational experience is preferred.
  • Experience & Skills
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in mining or heavy industrial operations.
  • Demonstrated experience managing or implementing critical safety controls.
  • Strong understanding of fatal risk management and control verification practices.
  • Experience working in remote mining operations is highly desirable.
  • Ability to influence operational teams and drive accountability.
  • Strong analytical and reporting capability.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.

What We Offer

  • Competitive compensation and site-based benefits package.
  • Opportunity to contribute to a high-performing mining operation.
  • Exposure to world-class mining practices and operational safety programs.
  • Career growth and development opportunities within MBCC.
